Background

The International Conference on Mountain Environment and Development (ICMED) will be held on October 2002, in China. It’s to respond the United Nation’s Suggestion that the year of 2002 is the International Mountains Year (IYM), and to enhance the international cooperation on mountain sciences and the public awareness in the protection and reasonable utilization of mountainous regions. ICMED is proposed by CAS, and co-sponsored by TWAS, ICIMOD, UNESCO, The Ford Foundation, WWF, FAO, National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Association for Science and Technology and Ministry of Sciences and Technology, etc. The Institute of Mountain Disaster and Environment, CAS & the Geographical Society of China organize it. The experts, scholars and the government officers specialized in mountain hazards; protection of mountain regions and mountain resources development and utilization from many countries in the world will discuss and exchange information on broad range of topics listed below.

Call for Papers

The official language of the conference is English, the papers and all correspondence are required in English. Two copies of abstract about 400 words, clearly stating the purpose, methods and conclusions of the work to be presented in the full paper should be submitted to ICMD 2002 Secretariat before 31, January 2002 for review. Each abstract should clearly state the most relevant conference topics; the full-length paper is limited within 6-8 pages.

Papers and Abstracts

1.       Text

Manuscripts should be in 10.5pt characters typed single-spaced on the A4 papers. The length of the manuscripts should not exceed 8 pages, including figures and tables. Technical terms and mathematical symbols used should be defined where they first appear in equations, figures, tables or text.

2.       Title

The title should be brief. The authors’ names and their present employment should be typed on the line below the title.

3.       Abstract

The body of manuscript should be preceded by an abstract with the maximum length of 300 words for a full-length article. It should be intelligible in itself without depending on references cited. Three to five key words should be provided at the bottom of the abstract.

4.       Illustrations and Figures

Good glossy print should accompany the manuscript and should be separately presented on a sheer of A4 papers. Photographs should be enlarged sufficiently to permit clear reproduction in half tone after reduction. Figures may either be drawn in black ink on tracing material, which does not stretch or processed with computer. Drawings should be about twice the size of final reproduction. The final size of lettering should be no smaller than 1.5mm high. Figures captions should be typed below the figures.

International System units should be used throughout the paper.

5.       Tables

Tables should be numbered consecutively and titled. All table columns should have an explanation of each table and contents of table must appear in the text.

6.       References

All references should be arranged in alphabetical order of the author’s names and grouped together in the end of the paper.

Conference Structure

Keynote lectures will be given in plenary sessions. Invited lectures and papers focusing on thematic complexes will be presented in parallel sessions in the first three days, the fourth day is scheduled for a one-day tour near by the city, the additional 4-6 days is scheduled for expeditions. Field Trip programs

1.Chengdu-Jiuzhai Gully-Huanglong-Dujiangyan-Chengdu (Minjiang River Line)

Jiuzhaigou is 460km from Chengdu.It derives its name from the 9 Tibetan hamlets scattered in the gully characterized by high mountains, deep lake and a carbonate barrier landforms. Famed the world over as the Dreamland and the Fairyland, it boasts emerald green lakes, split-level waterfalls rainbow-hued woods, snow-capped peaks and Tibetan folklores, which are often fondly referred to as the “Five Souls of jiuzhaigou”. Marvelous springs, waterfalls, fords and shoals integrate more than 100 lakes, diversified and beautifully shaped. Quite a 3-dimension landscape combined with motion and standstill.

In 1992, jiuzhaigou was classified in UN’s list of World’s Natural and Cultural Heritages and is quoted by relevant specialists of UNESCO and WTO as “World’s Superb Scenic Site”.

Adjacent to Jiuzhaigou and some 340km away from Chengdu, Huanglong is renowned for it “Four Unparalleled”: multihued ponds, Snow Mountains, canyons and forest. It is often referred to as a Celestial Garden on Earth.

2.Chengdu-Chongqing-Yichang-Wuhan-Chengdu (Yangtze River, the three Gorges)

The world famous Three Gorges, located on the Changjiang River, are made up of the precipitous Qutang Gorge, the peaceful and pretty Wuxia Gorge and the Xiling Gorge with its many shoals and rapids. The Three Gorges begins in Fengjie County, and ends in Yichang City with a total of 189 kilometers. The gorges area extends 93 kilometers. Located along the gorges are the Fengdu Ghost City, Shibao Village of Zhongxian County, Zhangfei Temple in Yunyang, Baidi City of Fengjie County and Zigui, the hometown of Qu Yuan. Many scenes and tales add mystery to the Three Gorges. It is the most famous of the Fjorty Eamous Scienic Spots in China, and is named the “Golden Tourism Route”.

In order to build the foundation of the Three Gorges Hydroe-electric Station, the biggest water conservancy project in China, Part of the scenic landscapes, historical relics and sites will have to be water will only make the scenery more marvelous and beautiful for visitors.

3.Chengdu-Hailuo Gully-Chengdu (Conch Mountain)

Conch valley Area is famous of the world for its low altitude glacier, large icefall and spring (Most of the glaciers in the world are found at high altitude). Glacier of Conch Velley, stretching the primeval forest which is 2850 meters above sea level, is 15km long, and is generally acknowledged as one which lies the lowest sea level of the same latitudes and can be provided to the public. The icefall is 500-1100 meters wide and 1080 meters high, and is the largest icefall of china up to now. The glacier tongue is 5.7km long, with various appearances, such as arch, city gate and crevasse, etc. There are three bath springs, and the water temperatur3e keeps 50-80c all the year. The vegetation of primeval forest is distributed vertically, covering 70sq kilometers.

4.Chengdu-Lhasa-Shigatse-Chengdu(Tibet line)

Tibet, located in southwest China, is bordered by India, Bhutan. Nepal, Myanmar and Sikkim, Tibet was liberated peacefully in 1951, and became an autonomous region of China in 1965. With the capital city of Lhasa, Tibet covers 1.2 million sq.km, and os populated by Tibetan, Han, and Menba, Luoba, Hui and other peoples.

Dominated by Qingzang Plateau, Tibet is a highland with an average elevation of over 40000 memters, and lies in a plateau or semi-arid climate. The Region includes the Kunlun and Hengduan Mountains, Tanggula, Gangdisi and Miainqing Tanggula, Only parts of the south are affected by the Credit of China. Tibet is also characterized by lower temperature that ranges from –3 to 12 degrees Centigrade, and the northern Tibet Plateau is covered for over half of the year with ice and snow. Lhasa has the longest yearly period of sunshine, and Lhasa and Tecaze are called the “Sunshine City”.

Tibetan has a long history in China. Buddhism has a long history in Tibet, and has had a deep influence on the area. Through the long history of religion and politics, Buddhism has had a great impact on Tibetan activities. The sky, plateau, altar, stupa, lane, mural, thang-ga(painted scroll), the sound of the giant Buddhist horn, classics recitation, five-color prayer flag which symbolizes the sky, clouds, water, fire and earth all tend to lose the visitor in the mysterious religious ambience. Also tales of the origin of Tibet culture, the development of Tibetan Buddhism, the marriage between Princess Wencheng and Songtzan Gampo, pilgmages of believers and the 12-century-old Potala Palace are some ot the fascinating treasures of Tibet.

Tsam-pa(Barley flour), butter tea,China wine, Quozuang dancing, Tibetan opera, classics discussions and folklore festivals are some of charming scenes and events that will capture your heart forever.
