Mountain Summit: September
22-26, 2002 Purpose. The Rocky Mountain Summit will bring together community leaders, resource managers, policy makers, scientists, educators and the general public for the purpose of increasing awareness and understanding of the social, cultural, economic and ecological significance of mountain ecosystems. The summit will promote the well being of mountain peoples and cultures and the ecological integrity of mountain ecosystems. Holding the conference in 2002 is significant because the UN General Assembly has declared 2002 the International Year of Mountains. Conference Format. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings will be devoted to plenary and/or concurrent sessions dealing with human dimensions of mountain ecosystems, sustainable mountain development, mountain ecosystems and resources, and mountain protected areas. There will be a field trip to Glacier National Park on Tuesday. Ben Gadd (Canadian naturalist and author) and Jack Gladstone (Blackfeet Indian singer and songwriter) will join in the celebration. Venue. Grouse Mountain Lodge is located in northwest Montana in beautiful Flathead Valley west of the Rocky Mountains. The area boasts seven championship golf courses, skiing, sightseeing, wildlife, sailing, and fishing, restaurants, shopping, Glacier National Park, Big Mountain Resort, Whitefish Lake, Flathead Lake and much more. fee is $275 per person, which includes a continental breakfast on Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday, lunch on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a conference
banquet on Wednesday evening, and the field trip to Glacier National Park.
