Building Maintenance Shops

The Building Maintenance Shops are a core component of Facilities Operations. The shops deliver a range of services to the University including emergency response, routine and preventative maintenance, and minor alterations to existing facilities. The department is comprised of five trade shops (General Maintenance, Electric, Plumbing, HVAC, and Lock/key) which are responsible for helping maintain over 4 million square feet of building space including over 400,000 square feet of parking garages. They support the Residence Hall Maintenance and Ritchie Maintenance Shops. The craft shops function as the stewards of the University building systems. No one knows the buildings and systems better than the individuals that provide service to them daily. The shop workers and supervisors are committed to providing quality service and support to the campus environment. General Maintenance Shop

This shop takes care of all general building repairs to windows, walls, floors, ceilings, doors and roofs. This shop also assists trades in some general repairs and preventative maintenance activities. Their activities include the annual maintenance of fire extinguishers and the checking of fire recall services in elevators. They also provide billable services that include hanging items, sign fabrication, some furniture fabrication, painting requests (less than 5 years old or special color requests), small building alterations/improvements and some special event support.

Electric Shop

The Electric Shop can take care of all of your building related electrical needs. Although they do not service or maintain department owned or leased electrical equipment such as copy machines, computers, ….it is always wise to check with them before purchasing new equipment so they can determine if there is enough power or the right kind of power to support the equipment you are buying. They also do not work on fire or security alarms which are the responsibility of Campus Safety. It is their responsibility to maintain the generators on campus, emergency lighting and outside lighting on campus. The billable services they provide include building alterations/improvements and setting up temporary power for events.

Plumbing Shop

The Plumbing Shop services rest room plumbing and fixtures, sewer, drain and water lines, drinking fountains, hot water heaters, and any other plumbing that is on campus. Their regulatory compliance activities include backflow certification, fire pump maintenance, grease and sand oil interceptor maintenance, fire sprinkler maintenance, wastewater discharge permits and emergency shower testing. The billable services they provide include building alterations and improvements.

 

HVAC Shop

The HVAC Shop places a priority on maintaining a comfortable working and learning environment for students, faculty and staff. The shop maintains cooling and heating equipment and controls. Activities include regular preventative and predictive maintenance, repair and adjustment of systems to help prevent failure. They are responsible for boiler certifications and CFC permits for our large chillers. This shop plays an important role in the energy management on campus. Their billable services include building alterations and improvements.

Lock & Key Shop

The Lock Shop provides keying services for all departmental requests as well as for all campus construction projects. These services include maintaining DU’s complex and proprietary master key system, working on door locking mechanisms and components, changing safe combinations and picking locks when required.

New keys and re-keying of locks are considered billable services.

Contract Services

The shops use many outside vendors to help them accomplish the services they provide. However, for elevator maintenance and pest control services please call 303.871.2200 and our customer service desk will call the appropriate outside vendor for these services.
