The Center for Spirituality

Department of Wellness

University of Denver

The Center for Spirituality is the result of a cross-disciplinary faculty initiative endorsed by the Department of Wellness. The proposal grew from a shared sense, later expressed in our mission statement, that this is a good time 'to encourage and develop the spiritual dimension of university life." Our Center is an affiliate of "The EDUCATION As Transformation project: Religious Pluralism, Spirituality and Higher Education," is located at Wellesley College. This project provides procedural and intellectual support to hundreds of affiliates, and it serves as clearinghouse for the flow of information between participants working with a variety of approaches on campuses across the country.

The Center has a functioning Internal Board of Directors, and in the future there will also be an External Board. The Internal board draws faculty from the Arts and Humanities, the social Sciences, the Natural Sciences, and the Daniels College of Business; the Board includes an undergraduate and representatives from Staff, Administration, counseling and Service Learning.

Our definition of spirituality, mission statement, and action plans for the remainer of this academic year:

Definition of Spirituality

Spirituality is a process whereby we open ourselves to connection and relationship--connection with others, with ourselves, with nature, with the universe, and with god, or whatever else the individual may take to be ultimate. It strives to integrate all the dimensions of wellness. Spirituality is present or operative within the great religious traditions of the world, but can also be a personal matter that is pursued without religious practices as such.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to encourage and develop the spiritual dimension of university life.
