Pick up your complimentary notepad from repurposed "D" logo stationery
(Aug. 13, 2013) Many departments across campus submitted a variety of "D" logo materials last spring when the University fully adopted the new shield logo. Thanks to the Center for Sustainability, old materials are being repurposed, reused or recycled sustainably.
The majority of white stationery has been converted into hundreds of pads of plain paper in assorted sizes. Visit the Quick Copy Center to pick up a complimentary notepad (limit two per employee; first come, first served). This project was funded by the Undergraduate Sustainability Committee. Special thanks to the Quick Copy Center for providing the service at a discount.
While single stream recycling like we have on campus is great for convenience, it leads to high rates of paper contamination, and mixes paper products, downgrading the fiber quality and limiting potential reuse. For this reason, 4,960 pounds of white paper, 145 pounds of cardboard, and 114 pounds of mixed paper (the last two were the boxes that held the paper) have been recycled through a collaboration with the recycling sorting facility at the University of Colorado – Boulder.
Items that can be reprinted with the shield logo will be reused. For example, some cloth shirts are being patched and some folders will get shield logo stickers. Remaining cloth and swag products are being donated to a nonprofit agency.
Sustainability Council meeting – Aug. 8, 8:30 – 10 a.m., Center for Sustainability (Johnson-McFarlane Hall)
(Aug. 6, 2013) Are you interested in sustainability but aren't sure how to get involved? Come to the next meeting of DU's sustainability council! The council will be setting goals and priorities for the upcoming academic year.
Join the challenge, bike to work, log your miles, win prizes.
(Updated Aug. 27, 2013) Get a great form of exercise, lower your driving costs, reduce your carbon footprint and get free gear while helping move DU up the Colorado leaderboard in the 2013 National Bike Challenge! The challenge runs from May 1 – September 30.
Each day you ride your name will be added to a monthly raffle. The more you ride the better your chances of winning (and the higher you move on the leaderboard for bragging rights)! Prizes include bicycle racks, tools, tune ups, lights, T-shirts, poster art and bikes. Like the Center for Sustainability on Facebook for an extra entry in the raffle.
Log your August miles! Anyone who logs at least 25 miles this month will be eligible to win one of five National Bike Challenge jerseys.
For the month of July, DU finished in second place for Colorado workplaces, and we have ridden over 17,000 miles and offset over 12,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Nationally, the Bike to Work Challenge has logged over 10 million miles and is almost on track to log 20 million miles by the end of the challenge period on Sept. 30.
