18th annual Women's Conference to be held March 1
... Call for Proposals and registration information

(Jan. 29, 2013) The 2013 University of Denver Women's Conference will be held on March 1. This year's theme "Harnessing the power of Title IX," celebrates the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the groundbreaking legislation known as Gender Equity in Education.

This all-day conference will examine the impacts of Title IX on the past, how it currently is utilized and how we may harness its power for the ongoing advancement of women in the United States. See the conference location and schedule. Please note that the first 75 to register will receive a special gift. You are welcome to attend just a portion of the day's events if you cannot stay for its entirety.

Campus Safety alert

(Jan. 29, 2013) Campus Safety wants all University of Denver community members to be aware of this Crime Stoppers bulletin from the Denver Police Department, issued following two forcible fondling incidents which occurred on or adjacent to campus last week. As a reminder, Campus Safety offers a walking escort for students, staff and faculty who do not want to walk on campus alone after dark. Escorts will walk you to and from any location on campus. To request an escort, call 303-871-2334. As a reminder, in life-threatening emergencies, or when you need immediate police, fire or medical assistance,make the following two calls: 911 and 303-871-3000 (Campus Safety).

Women's College Dean Lynn Gangone honored by chamber

(Jan. 22, 2013) Lynn Gangone, dean of The Women's College (TWC) at the University of Denver, has been named one of the "25 Most Powerful Women" in Denver by the Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce (CWCC) during a gala on Jan. 16.

The 25 women chosen are "leaders, innovators, trendsetters, role models and mentors," said Donna Evans, CWCC president and CEO.

Lynn said her passion is women's equality, something CWCC values by striving for equal opportunity connections. "I channel my passion for women's equality through education, specifically leading The Women's College. It's important to me to extend the opportunity to women to lead and make a difference in the world," she noted.

The CWCC is comprised of more than 1,000 members representing corporate executives, small business owners, nonprofits, as well as government employees. The CWCC is the "premier organization that provides opportunities and visibility for women in business through relationship development, education, mentorship, partnership and alliances."

Women's College associate dean receives MLK lifetime achievement award

(Jan. 22, 2013) Arthur Jones, associate dean of inclusive excellence at the Women's College of the University of Denver, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission. The award was presented to Jones on Jan. 15, during the 28th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission Celebration.

Jones is well known in Denver for his role as chair of the Denver Mayor's Commission on Cultural Affairs (2006–10) and as founder of the Spirituals Project.

Based at DU, the Spirituals Project is a multiracial, multigenerational organization that uses research, education and musical performance to raise awareness about historical oppression. According to Jones, the project began as a series of concerts, lectures and workshops focusing on the songs created and first sung by African-American slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jones wanted to preserve what he calls "an important American cultural treasure."

Student outreach in India benefits from new partnership

(Jan. 8, 2013) The University of Denver's International Student Admission office has recently partnered with the International Knowledge Center (IKC) in Bangalore, India, to help attract qualified undergraduate Indian students. For an annual membership fee, the University will receive reduced costs on recruitment travel in India, on-the-ground follow-up for inquirers and applicants throughout the country, a permanent University "desk" that students and parents can call or visit related to their applications, and receptions for prospective and current students and parents to which alumni will also be invited. All of this will be at no cost to the applicants.

If University faculty or staff will be visiting India and want make a stop at the IKC, they are more than welcome. Please contact Marjorie Smith in the Office of International Student Admission for more information (msmith@du.edu; ext. 12790).
