University in sync with Colorado Civil Union Act
(May 21, 2013) The University of Denver has for many years provided benefits to same-sex couples that now are required by the passage of the Colorado Civil Union Act which recently became part of Colorado state law. The Colorado Civil Union Act passed in this year's state legislature, was signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper in March and took effect May 1, 2013. The law provides thousands of committed couples with critical legal protections and responsibilities, including abilities such as taking leave to care for a partner, making medical and end-of-life decisions for a partner, and adopting children together. DU completed an assessment of its benefits program in view of the law's provisions, and is happy to say the University is not only in full compliance with the new law but has been providing same-sex couples benefits for a long time.
