Great Minds Play Alike

Aside from the sports that remain traditional to college campuses throughout the nation, DU fosters many distinctive and often unusual club sports and student organizations.

Club sports

"I have always wanted to be an equine veterinarian. I've definitely gotten a lot of time with many different horses, which is such a great experience for what I want to do." Laurian Horowitz, junior, biology, Keansburg, N.J.—equestrian

Whether you’ve been playing for years, or just want to try something new, DU has 30 different student-run club sports. From rugby and racquetball, to basketball and lacrosse, DU club sports have something for everyone.

"(They) really provide an opportunity for anyone and everyone to compete at every level, no matter what experience you have," says Dana Perkins, a senior molecular biology major from Kansas City, Mo., and current president of DU Club Sports.

Student organizations

Not much of a sports fan? With more than 100 student organizations, you don’t have to be. If you’re feeling intellectual, join your classmates in any of our 20 academic related clubs. If it’s the outdoors you want to explore, you’ll find plenty of excitement with the Alpine Club—DU’s oldest and largest student-run organization on campus.

Here's what some of our club sports athletes have to say:

Club Figure Skating.

"I get to start off my day by skating in Magness with the team and other local skaters. Magness is the nicest facility I’ve ever consistently trained at, and I love getting to know the younger skaters and getting to be a ‘big sister’ to them."

Club Kayaking.

"Club sports allows me to practice and hone my skills in the sport I love. I would not be as good of a kayaker without the time in the water that Club Sports allows me."

Ultimate Frisbee.

"I love traveling with the team. When you’re in a car with someone for 20 hours on your way back from a tournament in Arizona, that’s real bonding."

Club Cycling.

"I’ve really learned the importance of not quitting. Even when I’m losing a race and know I’ll never catch up, I never want to quit. I know that mentality carries over to the rest of my life."

Off-Road Club.

"I’ve really become a part of the entire Denver community. Off-Roading has allowed me to be a part of things I never thought I would—from fixing tires, to helping out the Denver Search and Rescue during snowstorms.'"

Club Racquetball.

"It’s not a huge commitment, and that’s why I like it. You don’t have to give up your life to play the sports that you love."

Start your own

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Start your own! "DU sponsors all different kinds of clubs, so I figured why not start a board-game club?" says Spencer Wagner, a senior mathematics major from Colorado Springs, Colo., and founder and former president of the Catan Board Game Club. "That way we can all do what we want to do."
