Boom Times for Women in Information Technology

By 2014, the field of information technology is expected to grow by more than one million jobs.

The University of Denver Women’s College stands ready to help women take full advantage of this exploding career opportunity with the Information Technology Studies program.

Women's College alumna Jennifer Wallen now has a successful career in information technology with Sun Microsystems.

“The industry needs people who are strong leaders with solid communications, organization and team building skills,” says Warren Kuehner, director of the program. “Women are intuitive and creative and often come to the table with this exact skill set and are well-equipped to manage projects.”

Kuehner adds that IT jobs are highly integrated within the organization and women will find their decision-making and problem-solving skills as invaluable as their technical abilities.

Jennifer Wallen, a business analyst with Sun Microsystems who earned her degree in applied computing from The Women’s College, agrees. Wallen, whose interest in IT started early, works with a team of three women.

“We play to each other’s strengths, we organize by collaborating and we get things done as a team.”

Women entering the field can expect to find well-paying jobs in every industry, business and non-profit field with salaries that range from $49,000 to $92,000.

The Women’s College—the only all-women higher education program in the Rocky Mountain region—provides adult women the opportunity to earn bachelor’s degrees by taking classes on the weekends and in the evenings.
