Grants and Scholarships

Graduate Grants and Scholarships are awarded by the individual graduate departments based on merit and/or need. This gift aid credits to your tuition account and usually requires full-time attendance. For questions regarding scholarship opportunities in your department, please contact the department directly.

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships (GTA/GRA) are merit awards designated by individual graduate school departments. GTA awards include tuition waivers credited directly to your tuition bill and stipends in the form of a salary. Students cannot have a work-study position and a GTA position; they may have one or the other.

DU Need-Based FFEL Grant - student must:

    • be a graduate student enrolled in an approved degree program
    • be enrolled at least half-time
    • have financial need as determined by the FAFSA

Award amounts vary, but may not exceed tuition. Please contact your department with questions regarding this award.

Graduate Studies Doctoral Fellowship - student must:

    • be a PhD student in an approved degree program
    • be enrolled in 8 hours per term

Award amounts vary from $1,000 to $5,000. Please contact your department with questions regarding this award.

Colorado "Critical Career" Graduate Grants - student must:

    • be a graduate student enrolled in an approved degree program
    • be a Colorado resident
    • be enrolled at least half-time
    • be enrolled in a critical career field as determined by the Colorado Department of Higher Education (science, technology, engineering, math and health care)
    • have an Expected Family Contribution (from the FAFSA) less than $6061

Award amounts vary from $1,000 to $5,000; funding for the grant is very limited.

Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program is available to students in the Morgridge School of Education enrolled in Teacher Education certificate and Gifted and Talented certificate programs, a Masters Teacher Education program, Boettcher's Teacher program, or Denver Teacher Residency program.

In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school which serves low-income students. The grant funding is up to $4,000 per year. If you do not fulfill the teaching obligation, the TEACH grant will be converted to an unsubsidized Direct Loan which must be repaid with interest charged from the date of the grant's disbursement.
