First-Year Seminar Program

For Students

You’ll meet four hours per week during the Fall quarter for your FSEM course. After Fall quarter is over your FSEM instructor will arrange one or two additional activities for the whole class. Your FSEM instructor is also your Faculty Mentor for your entire first year at DU and you'll meet individually with your Faculty Mentor during winter and spring quarters for advising and registration help. Faculty Mentors are also a good source of support if you need assistance any time during you first year. You can read descriptions of seminars for fall on the Course Descriptions tab.

How should I choose my FSEM?

We encourage you to consider using the FSEM course as an opportunity to explore a topic that is outside of your comfort zone or is something you haven't been exposed to previously. Keep in mind that these courses are designed for academic experimentation. The intention is to increase your breadth of knowledge and to expose you to something new.

How do I register for my FSEM?

Registration for your fall FSEM course begins at 8:00AM (MDT) on June 7, 2016 and closes at 11:59 AM (MDT) June 17, 2016. The Office of the Registrar maintains the most up-to-date information about registration and has created a step-by-step guide ("How to Register for Your First-Year Seminar"). You will need the Course Record Number (CRN) to register on PioneerWeb. You will register for your other Fall courses during Discoveries Week.
