Phoebe Smedley believes that a holistic approach to education creates a more powerful experience for the student. Allowing the student to take care of themselves outside the classroom gives them the opportunity to truly thrive inside the classroom.
Phoebe, an alumna from the Colorado Women’s College (CWC) and longtime CWC supporter, was inspired by her time at CWC and their legacy of community leaders. Phoebe has supported multiple areas across the University of Denver campus but wanted to make a bigger impact in a concentrated area about which she was passionate.
Her passion stems from empowering women through education and community engagement. Yet, she trusts that success stems from taking care of one’s own well-being before focusing on others. This dedication motivated Phoebe to invest in CWC students’ lives by establishing an endowed scholarship during the ASCEND campaign. By utilizing the University’s scholarship match, Phoebe increased her impact on CWC’s women’s lives exponentially.
Through this endowed scholarship Phoebe is striving to ease the financial stress of a college education for CWC students and, in turn, allow the students to further focus on their studies while better balancing their personal lives. By releasing some of the financial burden, she hopes to holistically improve the students’ lives during their time at DU. This improvement creates waves beyond their education and positively affects their careers and families for generations to come.
