The heart of Tokyo's Ginza District. |
This is an intensive month-long program for decision makers,
business professionals and interested individuals who seek
a broad and in-depth understanding of the United States. An
intellectually rigorous cross-cultural experience, this program
is ideal for participants who intend to be involved in ventures
with Americans. Providing close contact with many aspects
of life and work in America, the program is taught in English
with a focus on the cultural, business, and the institutional
fabric of the United States.
Held every fall in Denver, Understanding America typically
starts in early September.
Mr. Hosokawa, honorary PhD, is co-founder of the
Understanding programs in Japan. A Nisei, fluent in
Japanese, Hosokawa served as Consul General of Japan in the
Rocky Mountain States since 1974. A journalist by profession,
Hosokawa served as Chief of the Editorial Page of the Denver
Post for many years. An author of 11 books dealing with
Japanese-American issues, Mr. Hosokawa was awarded the Order
of the Rising Sun, for his significant contributions to Japanese-
American relations.
Dr. Peter Warren(see "About Us") is
co-founder of the Understanding America Programs. Warren's
contributions to civic and international activities have included
broad appointments to more than 15 organizations and boards
since 1970. Warren speaks and reads five languages in addition
to English.
Dr. Jim Terada serves as the cultural advisor to the
Understanding America Yamagata program. He was born
and reared in Tokyo, Japan. After World War II, he worked
for the US Army as an interpreter. He holds a PhD from the
University of Colorado, Boulder. He was a professor of management
and was named Colorado State Community College Faculty Member
of the Year in 1983. Currently, he is president of the Japanese
Association of Colorado and a board member of the Japan America
Society of Colorado. In 2001, the Japanese government awarded
him the Order of the Rising Sun for his efforts to improve
U.S.-Japan cultural understanding.
Mr. Kazuo Takahashi is governor
of Yamagata Prefecture in Japan. He has referred students
to the Understanding America Yamagata program since
1999. In 2001, the University of Denver was honored by a visit
from Governor Takahashi and many senior officials of Yamagata
Prefecture.
