Piano Degree Requirements

Prerequisites:

1. Completion of an appropriate undergraduate degree or the equivalent.
2. Completed application, including transcript(s), three letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose for graduate study in this degree program.
3. Admission to provisional or regular graduate standing.
4. Completion of successful audition in accordion.
5. Submission of scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of the application process.

A. Courses

Major Area:

• MUPR 4210 PIANO (12 hours)
• MUAC 3744 PIANO REPERTOIRE (12 hours)
• MUEN 3775—Piano Accompanying (ensemble participation) (12 hours)

Other Studies in Music:

• MUAC 4000 INTRODUCTION TO GRADUATE STUDY IN MUSIC (4 hours)
• MUAC 3--- or MUAC 4--- music history course (4 hours)
• MUAC 3--- and/or MUAC 4--- music theory courses (4 hours)

Electives:

• MUAC 3--- and/or MUAC 4--- and/or MUPR 4--- and/or MUEN 3--- and/or 3000-level non-music courses and/or 4000-level non-music courses, of which 4 must be in music history, music theory, or composition; no more than 4 may be in performance; and no more than 4 may be outside of music (8 hours)

B. Other Requirements

Entrance Proficiencies:

• Demonstration of graduate entrance-level proficiency in music history by examination.
• Demonstration of graduate entrance-level proficiencies in music theory and aural skills by examination.

Convocation and Performance Attendance:

• Attendance requirements as specified in the Lamont School of Music Handbook.

Grades:

• A 3.00 ("B") average is required in all graduate coursework accepted for the degree.
• No more than one-fourth of the hours accepted toward the degree may be with "C" grades. A grade lower than "C" (2.0) renders the credit unacceptable for meeting degree requirements.
• Students cannot take more than 8 hours beyond the degree requirements in order to make up grade deficiencies. Students whose grades are still deficient after taking the additional 8 hours are terminated from the degree program.
• A 3.00 ("B") average must be maintained in all music courses.
• Any course in the student's major area within music, or the course Introduction to Graduate Study in Music, must be repeated if a grade lower than "B" (3.0) is awarded. A grade of "B" or better must be received in the repeated course. Only one such repeat is permitted; two grades lower than "B" for the same course will result in termination from the Lamont School of Music.
• Upon failing a graduate music course, the student is placed on probationary status. If the student fails another music course while on probation, he/she will be terminated from the Lamont School of Music.
• Five quarter hours of "C" (2.0) quality work will be accepted in elective areas, provided they are balanced by the same number of quarter hours of "A" (4.0) quality work in any subject(s).

Ensemble Participation:

• Participation in at least 2 major ensembles each quarter, whether or not they are taken for credit toward the ensemble requirement listed above under course requirements.

Recital:

• Solo recital, of a minimum 50 minutes in length.

Final Examinations:

• Written comprehensive final examination.
• Oral comprehensive final examination.

Time Limit:

• All requirements for the degree must be completed within 5 years of matriculation.
