Examination

Before registering, new graduate students must take a diagnostic examination covering undergraduate physics. This examination serves to identify undergraduate deficiencies and helps to determine the student's initial program.

A qualifying examination is given once a year for full-time MS and PhD candidates. This examination must be completed successfully at the level appropriate to the degree desired before the comprehensive examination may be taken.

Master of Science in Applied Physics

The department also offers an MS in applied physics for baccalaureate engineers. This is a popular course of study and professional improvement for people already working in industry. For those currently employed, research projects can usually be matched to the employers' programs, and often the "advisor" can be someone from the employer so the continuing education benefits both the student and the industry for which he/she works.
