Recycling, Energy Audit Leads The Council

Exciting green programs at DU are taking root.

The Daniels recycling initiative has gone campus wide, and there are 3,000 new blue bins to help make it work.

The first-ever greenhouse gas inventory of DU’s carbon emissions is complete and was submitted to the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment on time. Click below to read the reports in pdf format. This important data about the University’s carbon footprint is crucial to forging a path toward carbon neutrality, a path that will take concrete form in 2009.

DU’s newest building, the $40 million Nagel Hall, opened in late August and is the first campus residence built to LEED environmental standards. Nagel is poised to achieve a “gold” LEED rating, which would make it DU’s second gold-certified building.

The first compressed natural gas pumping station on any college campus in Colorado is up and running at DU. Some 15 University vehicles have been converted to CNG, which burns cleaner and costs less than conventional fuels.

These exciting developments are some of the steps YOUR University and its Sustainability Council has been championing lately, with more to come.

Announcements

DU is entered into the nationwide competition, RecycleMania, from January 18 to March 28. We’re competing against 345 other colleges and universities from around the country to reduce waste and recycle more. Check out more information, and DU’s progress, at www.du.edu/orgs/senate and click “Sustainability.”

The "Pioneers for People" Coat Drive is from, Monday, January 12 - Wednesday, January 21, 2009. A variety of drop locations will be available across the DU campus. This is a great way to recycle your used winter clothing. The drive is looking to collect coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, scarves, and any other cold weather clothing. A listing of all drop locations will soon appear on the Staff Advisory Council website. The drive is to support the Denver Rescue Mission.

Pete's List is a new online resource for the redistribution of furniture and equipment that otherwise might end up in the landfill. An additional benefit, during these tough economic times, the university maybe able to reduce the cost of purchasing new items. When moving an item from one department that doesn't want it, to a department that wants the piece, it makes sense for both.

Corporate Express has a new online "Green" catalog. DU buyers for departments, take note and see if you can use the various products available from this new resource.
