Useful Tips for International Students

- When applying, please provide us with your full first name (given name) and last name (surname/family name), exactly as it appears on your passport.  Put this name on all application documents and in all correspondence sent to our office.

- To ensure that we send correspondence to the correct address, please make sure that you provide our office with your complete mailing address.  This includes your street address, city, region/state/province (if applicable), and postal code.

- Complete your application, including all documents required to issue an I-20 (see below), as soon as possible to ensure enough time to process your visa paperwork if accepted.

- You can find some useful information about studying in the USA on the following website: www.internationalstudents.com.

Additional Application Requirements for International Students:

International students must submit the following materials in addition to the materials listed under "All Applicants" on the How to Apply page:

1. Proof of English Proficiency

TOEFL scores for non-native English speakers with a minimum score as follows:
550 or higher on the paper-based exam
80 or higher on the internet-based exam (iBT)
213 or higher on the computer-based exam (not offered after 9/2006)
IELTS scores of 6.0 or higher may be submitted in lieu of the TOEFL.
Scores must be submitted to us directly from the testing agency.  Unofficial scores and photocopies of score reports will not be accepted.

To have TOEFL scores sent to the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, you will need our University Code (4842) and Department Code (88). Additional information is available on the ETS website: www.ets.org/toefl.  Keep in mind that it may take 4-6 weeks from the date you request your scores be sent for us to receive them.  ETS will not send scores older than 2 years; if your score is older than 2 years old, you will need to retake the exam.
For information about sending IELTS scores, please go to www.ielts.org

**If you received a degree from a college or university where English is the language of instruction and examination, this requirement is waived.  If this institution is outside of the United States, you may need to submit a statement from the university’s registrar office verifying that English is the language of instruction and examination.

2. Two Official Transcripts and Degree Certificates

Two official transcripts from each college or university where two or more quarter hours of work were completed, including an official statement of degrees earned must be sent directly from the institution(s) in separate sealed envelopes.  If the official transcripts are not in English, they must be accompanied by two certified English translations.

Applicants who graduated from an Indian college/university must submit the degree certificate (provisional or final) and marks sheets from the regionally-recognized/accredited flagship university, not the smaller colleges within that university.

**Please note: All students are required to have health insurance.  If you do not already have an insurance plan, one can be purchased through DU for $2,220 for the academic year. Additionally, all students are required to pay an annual student activity fee of $120.
