Associates Amy Bhalla - Administrator and Treasurer Amy is a second year M.A. Candidate in the International Human Rights program with a concentration in conflict resolution. Her academic interests are women's human rights, gender based violence, and reproductive rights. In addition to traveling extensively throughout Lan America, Amy is an advocate for social justice, increased environmental protection, poverty reduction, and the promotion of indigenous rights in the region. Amy hopes to work closely with her colleagues this year in promoting greater awareness and understanding of issues of concern for Latinos. Marjie Sackett - Arts and Media Coordinator Marjie is a second year student in the International Development program at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies with concentrations in human rights and humanitarian assistance. Her academic interests include child labor and child trafficking, refugee issues, and women’s rights. This year as Arts and Media Coordinator, she will focus on producing a resource guide on Human Rights in Latin America and planning for guest speakers and films. Michelle Doherty - Community Outreach & Policy Coordinator Michelle is a second year M.A. Candidate in the International Human Rights program with concentrations in law, security, and humanitarian assistance. Her academic interests range from transitional justice, indigenous rights and mobilization to women's rights and immigrant right. Michelle was a Peace Corps volunteer in the appropriate technologies for family health program in Guatemala from 2005-07. She has also traveled and studied throughout Latin America. Over the next academic year Michelle hopes to increase the involvement in CORD activities by bridging diverse groups and communities to create greater concern about human rights issues. Amanda Schweitzer - Publicity Coordinator Amanda is a second year M.A. Candidate in the Global Finance, Trade, and Economic Integration program with concentrations in humanitarian assistance, development and international law. Her academic interests range from capacity building, humanitarian aid and micro finance to immigration and human rights. Amanda was an Americorps volunteer teacher from 2002-04 at an urban bi-lingual Hispanic High school on the southwest side of Chicago, and has lived and traveled extensively throughout Latin America. This year Amanda is focusing on publishing the CORD quarterly newsletters, managing the CORD web site, sending out weekly update emails to the listserv, and facilitating communication with other on campus groups. Devin Finn - Symposium Coordinator As a Master’s student specializing in international security and human rights, Devin focuses on post-conflict political development, including institution-building, elections and security sector reforms. Her other interests include peace negotiations, counterinsurgency methods, international migration and internal displacement, and truth and reconciliation commissions. Devin worked for a few years in the think tank realm in Washington, DC, including as a journalist at the Inter-American Dialogue, where she covered politics and economics in the Americas. Prior to her DC stint, she received a B.A. in Political Science from Duke University and a certificate in Latin American studies. Devin’s objectives are broad participation by the Josef Korbel School and DU community in this year’s CORD symposium, which will examine transitional justice in Latin America from various perspectives, and to encourage awareness of human rights in the region. |
