Research and Projects

“Dilemmas of Democratization in War-Torn Societies,” with the University of Uppsala’s Peace and Conflict Research program, funded by the United States Institute of Peace and Sweden’s Vetenskapsrådet (Social Science Council). The project explores the evident dilemmas in transitions from war to democracy in deeply divided societies emerging from violent conflict. The project yields a book, a policy paper, and a new democracy-in-war-torn-societies assessment instrument to link theory, research, and policy prescriptions.

“Research Partnership on Post-War Statebuilding,” with the University of Ottawa, funded by the Program in International Peace and Security, Carnegie Corporation of New York.  RPPS is comprised of scholars from Canada, the United States, the U.K., Norway and Germany, who share an interest in the challenges and dilemmas of long-term state-building in societies that are just emerging from war.  The project yields a book, a policy paper, and a series of dissemination events at the United Nations and Washington, D.C. in 2007.
