Drawing on perspectives from international relations and comparative politics, his principal fields, Professor Viotti teaches graduate classes in comparative and international politics with a focus on foreign policy and international security: Comparative Politics Theory; US Foreign Policy; US National Security Policy; and Homeland Security, Civil Society and Human Rights. He also has taught and on occasion conducts graduate seminars on strategy, arms control, and European, Asian, and third world foreign and defense policies. Professor Viotti began teaching at the U.S. Air Force Academy as an instructor in 1972, assistant professor in 1974, associate professor in 1978, and professor of political science in 1984. Professor Viotti also served on sabbatical in Stuttgart, Germany as deputy political advisor at the U.S. European Command (1981-83), political science department deputy head (1983-90), and acting chair in 1990 and 1991, retiring as a Colonel after three decades of service that began as a cadet in 1962. Upon military retirement, he joined the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies faculty in September 1992 where he serves as an associate professor and IGLOS executive director.
