    Dyslexia is the most common yet misunderstood of all learning disabilities and affects more than one out of every ten of students. Join Morgridge College and the Center for Professional Development at DU for a 3-day intensive, interactive symposium as we explore how children learn to read, why some children struggle, and what we can do to improve literacy outcomes for all students.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Analyze mild, moderate, and severe levels of reading difficulty.

    2. Analyze error patterns in oral and written language assessments.

    3. Identify common profiles of dyslexia.

    4. Understand comorbidities of dyslexia.

    5. Recognize the importance of the language domains to proficient reading and writing.

    6. Analyze how aspects of cognition and behavior affect reading and writing.

    7. Assess interactions between reading and writing proficiencies and factors such as culture, environment, and/or social experiences.

    8. Summarize the major components of literacy.

    About Dr. Lynne Fitzhugh

    Dr. Lynne Fitzhugh is a nationally recognized expert in dyslexia and related disorders. She is President of the Colorado Literacy and Learning Center and Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of the Reading Institute at Colorado College. Dr. Fitzhugh has been a featured speaker at both local and national conferences, and her publications include articles and videos on dyslexia, written expression, teacher preparation, and parent education. She has provided expertise for numerous television and radio broadcasts on dyslexia. Over the past two years, Dr. Fitzhugh has consulted with Odyssey Elementary School in Falcon, Colorado, in the development of a Literacy Excellence School, the first public school in the state to formally identify children with profiles of dyslexia, allowing them to receive dyslexia remediation as a part of their daily instruction.

    Dr. Fitzhugh received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Southern Methodist University and is a Certified Academic Language Therapist, Qualified Instructor, and Licensed Dyslexia Therapist. She developed the Literacy Intervention Specialist Certification Program, a graduate level dyslexia therapist training program which has earned accreditation from the International Dyslexia Association and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and offers Colorado Department of Education Reading Endorsements at both the Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist levels. Dr. Fitzhugh currently serves as Vice-President of the Academic Language Therapy Association, is a former member of the International Dyslexia Association Board of Directors, and is a member of the American Psychological Association. As President of CLLC, Dr. Fitzhugh provides evaluation services, professional development, consultation, and community outreach. Dr. Fitzhugh also has personal experience with dyslexia: her husband and three of her four grown children are highly successful dyslexics.
