Supervisor Boot Camp: Practice-based Success

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe some current theories of supervision and identify how those theories inform the practice of supervision;
  • Create a plan for continuing to learn and grow as a supervisor;
  • Identify common supervision pitfalls and how to avoid them;
  • List some important factors to consider when conducting developmentally-oriented supervision,
  • Discuss their motivation for serving as a supervisor and identify how issues of countertransference can impact supervision

Dr. Nicole Taylor has been involved in the supervision and training of students at the undergraduate, graduate, internship, and post-doctoral level.  She has worked in counseling centers, hospitals, and academic institutions and is passionate about improving the clinical training and supervision of students at all levels.  In addition to her work here at GSPP, she also works as a Psychologist with the Obstetrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center.


Supervising Child Psychotherapy: "Do I have to work with these parents?"

  • Explain the development and effects of stigma on the therapist-parent alliance
  • Recognize the ways in which stigma may present in the work of supervisees conducting child psychotherapy
  • Discuss ways to address therapist-parent stigma in the supervision of students

Judy has a doctorate in clinical and child-clinical psychology and has been teaching at GSPP since 1997 in the areas of life-span development and trauma, child/adolescent diagnosis and treatment.  She supervises graduate students working with child and adolescent clients through our Professional Psychology Center.  Judy directs our Master's Program in International Disaster psychology, a program that has won 2 national awards for innovative training in professional psychology.  She has a private practice in the Denver community working with children, adolescents and their parents and has published in such areas as stigma and child psychotherapy, health psychology, stress and coping in childhood, and disaster psychology.

Michael Karson has been practicing and supervising child and family therapy for over 30 years. He is the author of Patterns of Child Abuse: How Dysfunctional Transactions are Replicated in Individuals, Families, and the Child Welfare System.


The Professional as Performer: Engage, Enjoy, Excel!

Learning objectives:

  • List major demands and challenges as well as opportunities in the work of a professional in psychology (e.g., supervisor, academic instructor).
  • From a sport and performance psychology perspective, summarize practical insights into the perspective on the professional as a performer.
  • Compile a list of cognitive behavioral techniques that can be useful in pursuing professional excellence.
  • Plan one’s own action plan to continue to engage, enjoy, and excel as a professional.

Artur is a professor at University of Denver Master’s Program in Sport and Performance Psychology where he also directs Field Placement. He has supervised graduate students delivering of sport psychology services to individual clients and teams for past 9 years. His scholarly work focuses on sport psychology practice, coach-athlete relationships, and coping strategies in elite performers.

 

Jamie L. Shapiro, Ph.D., CC-AASP
Assistant Professor

Jamie is an assistant professor at the University of Denver for the Master of Arts in Sport and Performance Psychology (MASPP) program. Her interests include the psychology of sport injury, exercise psychology, learning life skills through sport, and ethics and training in sport and performance psychology. She is a certified consultant of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (CC-AASP) and has consulted with athletes, teams, and exercisers on enhancing their engagement, enjoyment, and excellence in their performance.


This workshop is approved for 3.0 hours of continuing education.  The University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. GSPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
