Center for Oncology Psychology Excellence

(COPE)

What is COPE?

The Center for Oncology Psychology Excellence (COPE) at the University of Denver (DU) is a first-of-its-kind training program and partnership with community cancer centers. The first course in the specialty sequence will begin in the Fall of 2016.

COPE will:

  • offer graduate-level specialty coursework to doctoral students in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP)
  • create field placement opportunities in cancer centers across Colorado
  • build community partnerships to increase access to psychological and social services for cancer patients
  • serve as a hub for research and program evaluation on the psychological, social, and emotional impact of cancer

Why COPE?

  • One in two men and one in three women will get cancer in their lifetime.
  • Cancer can cause distress for individuals and their families, friends, and caregivers.
  • Well-trained mental health care providers can help cancer patients in many ways.
  • As distress in cancer patients is identified, there is an increased need for psychosocial providers to evaluate, triage and care for cancer survivors and their caregivers.
  • Research indicates that cancer centers are struggling to meet the psychosocial needs of patients.
  • Doctoral-level psychologists have unique skills in assessment, research, consultation, supervision, and training.
  • Psychologists can help with cancer-related symptoms like insomnia, nausea, anxiety about treatment, fear of recurrence, and depression.

Why GSPP?

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) is uniquely suited to be the hub of COPE. Our students are well-trained generalists in clinical psychology and we have existing relationships with community organizations, including field placements in cancer centers.

GSPP has faculty expertise in this area and we have experience developing clinics to serve specialty populations. Our well-respected alumni make up the majority of the licensed psychologists in the state of Colorado and our students are highly sought-after for community field placements.
