MSW Admission Procedures

Applications for admission to GSSW are processed on a continuous basis until classes are full. When two-year and advanced standing MSW classes are full, applicants may be placed on a waiting list. Prospective students are encouraged to apply as early as possible for optimal consideration.

Prospective students may obtain and submit an application to GSSW in one of three ways:

Since the GSSW application for admission is “self-managed,” all required documents are obtained and submitted by the applicant. These documents include the following:

  • the Master of Social Work Application form
  • the Additional MSW Application Information form (optional)
  • two official transcripts from each college or university previously attended
  • two letters of reference from sources able to address the applicant’s ability, potential and readiness for graduate education and professional social work practice; references should include one academic professional (a professor, adviser or field instructor) and one employment supervisor; advanced standing applicants who are currently enrolled in a BSW program must submit a letter of reference from their field instructor; other advanced standing applicants must submit a letter of reference from an employer in the human services field.
  • a written Career Goals Statement (form supplied with admission packet)
  • a written Experience Summary (form supplied with admission packet)
  • a résumé

International students must also submit the International Application Form and their TOEFL score, as described above.

In addition, the application must be accompanied by a nonrefundable application fee of $60, in the form of a check or money order payable to the University of Denver. Prospective dual degree students applying to another DU graduate program as well as GSSW must pay a non-refundable application fee to each of the two programs.

Prospective students may be asked to schedule interviews as a part of the application process. The interview may be conducted either at GSSW or within a reasonable distance from the applicant's home, or by telephone.
