What is Gender and Women's Studies?

The Gender and Women's Studies program offers a cross-disciplinary undergraduate major and minor comprised of courses taught throughout the university by a diverse group of faculty. Reflecting the vitality of recent feminist, ethnic, and queer scholarship, these courses examine the roles of gender, race, and sexualities in the lives of all people.

Our Mission and Goals

The mission of the Gender and Women's Studies program is to explore gender as a primary category of analysis for the understanding of individuals and human societies in historical and cultural contexts.

The program will strive to meet the following goals:

1.  To deepen our understanding of how the construction of gender and sexualities relate to the oppression of women and minorities, and to structures of privilege.

2.  To examine critically the intersection of gender with race, ethnicity, class, age, sexualities, abilities, as well as with other categories of 'difference.'

3.  To promote the inclusion of gender and women’s issues throughout DU’s pedagogy and curriculum, through the offering of a major and a minor as well as other campus connections, activities and special events.

4.  To promote civic engagement within DU and the wider community.

5.  To continue the tradition of studying women’s intellectual, material, artistic, and spiritual contributions throughout history and in today’s world.
