Issues in World History 8 credits
This repeatable course (4 credits each) is designed to help ensure that all students are introduced to a variety of geographical areas and periods of study, and that they engage in comparative history. Students will also be exposed to a variety of approaches to the study of history, as embodied in the work of the individual faculty members in this team-taught course.

Concentration in the History of Asia, Europe, or the Americas 12 credits
Students must take 3 upper-division (2000 level or higher) courses in their area of concentration. At least one of the three must be a 3000-level seminar. Students who wish to fashion an individualized concentration may do so with the advice of their mentor and the approval of the Department.

Comparative Advanced Level Study 4 credits
Students must take at least one other 3000-level seminar in an area outside their field of concentration. For example, a student concentrating in European history must take a seminar in American or Asian History.

What is History? 4 credits
This course is designed specifically to train students in historical methodologies and to think historiographically, i.e., to see historical issues the way historians see them.

Senior Seminars 8 credits
Students must take Senior Seminar I in the fall quarter of their senior year, a course taught in conjunction with individual faculty members. This course focuses specifically on honing students' historiographical and bibliographical skills in preparation for their senior research projects. Students will produce a research proposal at the end of the course.

Students must then take Senior Seminar II in the winter quarter of their senior year. This course concentrates on research in original historical sources and on the oral and written presentation of research findings. Evaluation of students' performances in both quarters of Senior Seminar will be based on input from individual mentors as well as the primary instructor.

Electives 8 credits
Foundations of History (AHUM 1216) courses may be counted for elective credit toward the major, but a single course cannot count for both AHUM and History credit. Students may also be given elective credit for high school Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate examination scores, at the discretion of the Chair of the Department. Ordinarily, no more than 4 credits of Foundations, AP, or IB work may go toward the History major.

TOTAL CREDITS REQUIRED FOR A MAJOR IN HISTORY 44 credits

Requirements for the Minor in History

Students minoring in History must take 20 quarter hours of History courses, with at least 8 quarter hours at the 2000 or 3000 level.
