Accepted for Study Abroad

Congratulations on your acceptance to a study abroad program!

In this section you can get information you need to know about your next steps. Be sure to carefully read through the acceptance paperwork you received from both your study abroad program and from DU’s Study Abroad Office. Some of the paperwork may require signatures and may be time-sensitive.

Pre-Departure Orientation

Prior to your adventure abroad, you will attend a Pre-Departure Orientation session. This session is required by DU to ensure that you have completed necessary paperwork and that you understand the policies of the study abroad program. Guest speakers will cover topics such as safety, health and travel. This session also will give you a chance to meet others who will be studying abroad.

In addition to the Pre-Departure Orientation session, you may attend a country- or region-specific Prep Session. Prep Sessions cover more specialized information about your study abroad program, including visa application requirements. At the Prep Sessions, returned study abroad students will be on hand to answer your questions.

DU also offers a Parents' Orientation in May for students departing for programs commencing in the fall.

Below are the schedules of orientation and prep sessions as well as DU’s pre-departure handbooks for you to download. If you do not see listed a handbook you need, please contact your study abroad advisor.

Student Visas

  • Visa requirements vary from country to country and from consulate to consulate
  • Visa requirements vary depending on the length of your stay
  • You are the only person who can apply
  • Governments, not schools, determine visa regulations
  • There is a window of opportunity to apply for a student visa—know your dates
  • Don’t compare notes with other students going abroad; their situation might be different from yours
  • You need a valid passport to apply for a student visa (must be valid for at least six months after the end of your program)

If you qualify for the Cherrington Program, the University of Denver will reimburse you for the expense of the visa; however, if you are required to appear in person at an embassy/consulate as part of the visa application process, travel costs for this will be at your own expense. Please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor for more details.

Pre-Departure Assessment

Prior to leaving for study abroad, you are required to complete an online pre-departure assessment which inquires about your experiences and expectations prior to your study abroad program. The purpose of these assessments is to help the University of Denver improve the quality of its overall study abroad program and the preparation given to students before they study abroad.
