Study Abroad 101

The first step in beginning your study abroad application process is to attend Study Abroad 101 with a Study Abroad Peer Advisor. During the 45-minute session, you will become familiar with all of your options, including programs, locations, language requirements, and more. After the 101 Session you can begin researching programs, and then meet with a Study Abroad Program Coordinator.

Note: Study Abroad 101 attendance is required for all undergraduates before meeting with a Study Abroad Program Coordinator.

Fall 2009 Schedule:

  • Mondays: 11am and 1pm
  • Tuesdays: 12pm
  • Wednesdays: 12pm and 2pm
  • Thursdays: 2pm
  • Fridays: 12pm and 2pm

The sessions last about 45 minutes. No appointment is necessary to attend Study Abroad 101, except during interterm breaks. If you would like to schedule a Study Abroad 101 session over interterm, call the Study Abroad Office at 303-871-4912.

Peer Advisors can come to you! If you would like a Peer Advisor to visit your dorm hall meeting or your student group meeting and give a Study Abroad 101 session, send an email to .

Regional Advising Sessions

A second session is required if you are interested in one of the following countries (Fall 2009 schedule):

  • Australia: Tuesdays at 2pm, Thursdays at 11am
  • New Zealand: Tuesdays at 2pm, Thursdays at 11am
  • Italy: Thursdays at 1pm, Fridays at 3pm
  • Spanish-speaking countries: Tuesdays at 3pm, Fridays at 11am
  • UK: Mondays at 2pm, Wednesdays at 1pm
  • Ireland: Mondays at 2pm, Wednesdays at 1pm

The number of options available in these countries can be overwhelming. The advising sessions are designed to give a brief overview of DU programs in the region to help you find the best fit. If there is a Regional Advising Session offered for the country that you’re interested in, you are required to attend the session prior to meeting individually with a Study Abroad Program Coordinator.

If no regional advising session is offered for the country that you’re interested in, your only prerequisite before meeting with a Program Coordinator is to attend Study Abroad 101. These sessions also typically last about 45 minutes.

World on Wednesday in Nelson Private Dining Room

The World on Wednesday program is an informal time for you to meet with study abroad alumni. The setting is casual, conveniently held in the Nelson Private Dining Room at 6pm on most Wednesdays of the fall and winter quarters (bring your dinner tray!). Meetings are organized by theme or location, so watch the schedule to see which sessions would benefit you the most.

Come with your questions or just a curiosity to learn more about the rest of the world and what your fellow DU students have experienced. Study Abroad Program Coordinators are also present to facilitate discussion and answer questions. Sessions typically last about 45 minutes.

Fall 2009 schedule:

  • September 23: Winter and spring quarter study abroad programs
  • September 20: France
  • October 7: Spanish-speaking countries
  • October 14: Australia and New Zealand
  • October 21: ISEP and Scandinavia
  • October 28: Africa and Middle East

The Study Abroad Fair

The 2009 Fall Study Abroad Fair is scheduled for September 22nd from 10am - 2:30pm on the Campus Green. The Study Abroad Fair is a great opportunity for you to browse all of your program options in one place. Rather than just surfing the web, you’ll get to meet face-to-face with program representatives, returnees, Study Abroad Program Coordinators, and Peer Advisors. This is a huge event that only happens once a year. Don’t miss out!

Classroom Visits

Study abroad staff members are available for classroom visits on-campus to give a 5-minute synopsis of the study abroad program at DU and give students information on how to get started. If you are a DU faculty member and would like to request a classroom visit, send an email to .
