Through the Argentine Universities Program—offered in cooperation
with the Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University and the COPA
program—students take courses at any or at a combination of
these Buenos Aires universities, each with its own location and course
offerings. Students are required to take an intensive language and
culture course that meets throughout the semester.
Location
As the capital and business center of Argentina, cosmopolitan
Buenos Aires is known for its European-inspired architecture, lively
café scene, rich cultural offerings and passion for the
tango.
Areas of Study
Each university in the program has a separate location and a
range of courses. Most students choose to take courses at one or
two universities. In addition to the university courses, students
are required to take an intensive language and culture course that
meets throughout the semester.
Activities
Music is the centerpiece of the Argentine culture, but the opportunities
for outdoor activities in the world’s eighth largest country
are limitless.
Accommodations
Students will be housed with an Argentine family. In Buenos Aires,
the commute time can vary from five minutes to forty five minutes.
Most meals are included.

3.0 GPA and at least 7-8 quarters of university-level Spanish
language.
Founded in 1978 with an emphasis in macroeconomics, the Universidad
del CEMA offers four undergraduate degrees and 10 graduate-level
programs. The campus has about 1,000 students in its programs.

The Universidad Nacional de Cuyo is renowned for its fine and performing
arts, politics, economics and literature departments. In addition
to regular university courses, students are required to take Spanish
language and Argentine culture. This program is offered in cooperation
with the Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University and the COPA
program.
Location
Mendoza, with a population of nearly 700,000, is located in the
Argentine wine region and at the foot of the Andes, which provide
a wealth of opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Areas of Study
In the Mendoza program, students must take a Spanish language
and Argentine culture course along with the regular university
offerings. Fields of study include: Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, and
the Social Siences.
Accommodations
Students will be housed with an Argentine family. Public transportation
is available. Three meals per day are included.

IES center is located in downtown Buenos Aires, and offers a strong
language program for students with a beginning to intermediate level
of Spanish.

level of Spanish. Students will take 9 semester credits (approximately
13 quarter credits) of Spanish language courses plus two electives
in fields such as political science, Latin American studies, and
literature. A business course is offered during the spring
semester. Internships are also available.
Students who have two or more years of university-level Spanish language background
and who plan to take classes with Argentine students should apply to the IFSA-Butler
Argentine Universities or Universidad Nacional de Cuyo program.
Activities
Music and dance are centerpieces of the Argentine culture. Fútbol
(soccer in the U.S.) is a national pastime; horse racing, polo,
and boxing are also popular sports. Many opportunities for
outdoor activities also exist. IES organizes several excursions
as part of the program; possible locations include Chascosmús,
Colonia (Uruguay), La Rioja, Salta, Tierra del Fuego, and Tigre.
Accommodations
You may choose to live with a host family or in a student residence
hall. Both housing options include ten meals per week. Homestays
are within a 60 minute commute and residences are within a 30 minute
commute of the IES Center.

tango originated in the brothels of Buenos Aires in the 19th century.
Argentine “futbol” fans still talk about how their country
won the World Cup of Soccer in 1978 and 1986. Sports fans also are
proud of the Men's Basketball Gold Medal from the 2004 Olympic Games
in Athens.
Argentina is home to Aconcagua —at 22,831 feet, it’s
the highest mountain in the Americas.
Argentina ’s most famous writer, the Buenos Aires-born Jorge
Luis Borges (1899–1986), ranks with James Joyce and T. S. Eliot
as a leading figure of modernism.
The late Astor Piazzola, composer and bandoneon artist, was beloved
worldwide for his “nuevo tango” classics.
