One of the most successful events last quarter was The
Office of Internationalization's Annual Fall Reception held on October
8th. The 270 guests had the opportunity to interact with diplomats from
13 countries, DU administrators, faculty and staff, community members,
and students. Food from ethnic restaurants around Denver provided participants
with delicious tastes from around the world!
Chancellor Dan Ritchie presented international service awards to: Darcie
Fontaine (study abroad), Bassem Hassan (international student), Joseph
Campe (international service learning ) and community members Kent Scroggs
and Gene Congdon (community service). This was the first event at the
I-House where we welcomed President Holtzman.
Joyce Jappelle, chair of the International Friendship Program, has helped
to match more than forty international students with community members
to develop cross-cultural friendships through enjoyable social activities.
Erin Yoshimura, chair of the Professional Mentor Program, is linking 25
international students with community professionals for career support,
resume building and cross-cultural awareness trainings in the business
world .
As part of the Culture Corps Program, the International House was honored
to have Peruvian Consul General Marita Landveri and Vice Consul General
Ramiro Silva host an authentic Peruvian lunch. Jamie Polliard, Chair of
the Culture Corps Program, will extend this opportunity to other Colorado
Consular Corp Members and invite international students to speak in Denver
classrooms about their cultures and countries.
EKTA, the India Friendship Group, recently held a professional networking
night. Community leader Sudhir Verma brought seven successful professional
and business leaders from the Denver Indian community to participate in
a panel discussion about their business and career experiences in the
United States. The Friendship Group program chair, Michael O’Keefe,
is excited about the upcoming Chinese, Japanese and Korean groups forming
in the next few months.
Our International Spouses Club reaches out to all spouses of international
students and scholars. Program chair, Nancy Simonds McGrath, welcomes
spouses into the Denver community through volunteer opportunities, English
language lessons, and invitations to events sponsored at the International
House.
The Fabulously French Evening attracted 50 students and community members,
who enjoyed delightful French music by accordion player Ron Tomocik and
accompanying violinist. Desserts were provided by Pascal and Barbara Trompeau,
of Trompeau Bakery, who also shared insights about their business.
A most sincere thank you to Global Ambassador program chairs, community
volunteers, the staff at the Office of Internationalization, students,
administrators and all those who have helped make Global Ambassadors at
DU programs and events innovative, collaborative, exciting and meaningful
to all.
