What Will I Learn?

When you enroll in ILLC, you’ll learn to appreciate how different cultures and experiences affect the way people view global issues and concerns. You may not meet someone from each of the 190 or so countries recognized by the United Nations and you probably won’t encounter native speakers of the world’s 2,700+ languages, but you will gain a broad and invaluable global perspective.

As an ILLC student, you will enroll in one two-credit seminar each quarter of your first year. Courses change each year and are taught by faculty from a number of different disciplines. Seminars may be used for elective credits or applied toward certain majors or minors.

Past seminars include:

News of the World:
An exploration of current events through the eyes of the international news media.

European Cinema, Its Tradition and Its Legacy:
Contemporary society and culture through the cinematic lens.
Communicating Across Cultures: Culture and intercultural communication issues with readings, activities and exercises, guest speakers, and interviews to build awareness about cultural identity.

Working in Culturally Diverse Teams:

An experiential forum for developing intercultural understanding, cross-cultural competence, and team effectiveness in culturally diverse settings.

Service Learning in a Diverse Society:
A course designed to acquaint students with the service learning movement and provide an opportunity to contribute a minimum of 8 volunteer hours in a culturally diverse setting.
