Curriulum For All Grade Levels (K-12)

Center for Teaching International Relations Publications- The Center for Teaching International Relations (CTIR) is a national leader in developing and publishing educational materials to enhance international understanding in K-12 classrooms. Each of our books is developed by teachers for teachers and contains everything you need to bring the world to your classroom. Free Heifer Literacy and International Landmines curriculum available to teachers.

SPICE-Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education- The Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) serves as a bridge between Stanford University and K-12 schools by developing multidisciplinary curriculum materials on international themes.

INTERACT Simulations- Tell me, I forget, Show me, I remember, Involve me, I understand. Interact curriculum helps transform your classroom into a stimulating creative environment with unique simulations and real world activities to get students excited and involved in their learning. Interact has many simulations with Social Studies and Cross-cultural themes.

Geography Education National Implementation Project (GENIP)- GENIP is active in providing expertise and leadership in the development of policies related to geography education. Since the publication of Geography for Life: National Geography Standards 1994, GENIP's primary focus has been the promotion of Standards-based geography instruction as an integral part of every student's educational experience.


Teach With Movies
Teach with Movies encourages the use of relevant films in the classroom as a learning tool which can compliment content topics. Learning Guides and lesson plans accompany each recommended film and describe the benefits of the movie, helpful background information, discussion questions, bridges to reading/projects/etc. Annual subscription is $8.99.

The World Affairs Council- The World Affairs Council has developed a manual entitled "Your Council, Your Schools, and the World: the Global Classroom". It is a detailed synthesis of the work done by all world affairs councils in their school programs. Two copies of this manual have been distributed to all councils for use by educators. Other copies are available at the national office for a small charge. Contact your local World Affairs Council for details.

Southern Center for International Studies- SCIS provides K-12 curriculum for international awareness and an understanding of current foreign affairs. The Southern Center for International Studies provides several curriculum units, videos, classroom materials, etc. related to international affairs.

What is the United Nations?- Adapted from the popular School Kits from the United Nations, these two units are great introductions to the history and workings of the UN. These units are for Primary Schools & Secondary Schools.

The National Geographic Teacher Store- Browse all of National Geographic's educator publications including teaching kits, videos, lesson plans, curriculum units, software, classroom magazines, maps, etc. K-12.

The American Forum- Focused on giving young Americans a global perspective as an accepted part of their educational background. It is the goal of the American Forum that the young people of the United States will achieve an understanding of global issues, of cultural differences and similarities, and of the connections which exist in their daily lives between their actions - and those of their country - and others taking place in all parts of the globe, from east to west and north to south. Five College Center for East Asian Studies- The Center maintains a resource library of curriculum materials, provides professional development opportunities (most specifically in the New England area of the U.S.), and encourages the study of China, Japan, and Korea.

WorldLab
WorldLab is a thematic, integrated science and social studies program developed at Johns Hopkins as part of the Roots & Wings project which promotes an understanding of the interdependence of economic, political, biological, and physical systems.


Primary (K-6)

Mapping the World by Heart- Extensive World Geography Curriculum for Primary and Lower Intermediate Grades.

World of Education- A non-profit organization selling fair trade "curriculum baskets" including native-made, hand crafted cultural artifacts, accompanying lesson plans, and hands-on activities to teach about different cultures around the world.

WorldAware Primary Global Studies Curriculum- Worldaware provides a range of high quality learning resources for primary teachers

"Read to Feed" Sustainable Development Curriculum from Heifer International - Read to Feed is both a global/development education opportunity and a reading motivation program, designed primarily for children in grades K-8. Through reading, discussion, videos, curriculum, and the web site, they learn about other cultures, the root causes of hunger and poverty and sustainable solutions by studying Heifer’s development model. There is a Free 3/4 Grade Level Literacy Unit available for teachers including storybook, video, curriculum, and teacher's guide.

How Big is Africa? -The Africa Studies Outreach Program has produced an introductory 30-minute video discussing and dispelling stereotypes while providing a basic overview of the continent's geography, culture, and history (includes a wonderfully detailed curriculum guide). The Outreach Program has also produced a full-color poster of Africa, with curriculum guide.


Intermediate (6-8)

Decisions, Decisions - Access to an online and printed current events curriculum for grades 5-10.

WorldAware Secondary Global Studies Curriculum- Worldaware provides a range of high quality learning resources for intermediate and secondary teachers.

Children of the Camps: A story of civil liberties- This CD-ROM is a prototype educational project which uses exciting new multimedia technologies to teach school children the history of the Japanese internment period. In addition, the CD-ROM features the stories of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service, and highlights the Immigration and Settlement period of Japanese American history. Created and distributed by the Japanese American Historical Society.

Japanese Internment Camp Curriculum- The Japanese Internment Camp Class Kit can be used for hands-on activities on the Japanese American WWII internment. These ready-to-use materials for a class (up to 34) help engage students in developing decision-making and critical-thinking skills. Created and distributed by the Japanese American Historical Society.

Making Global Connections in the Middle School- Lessons on the Environment, Development & Equity. Eleven interactive lessons by classroom teachers most designed for 1 to 2 periods which engage critical thinking skills. Sample lessons include: Sustainable Development: the Ecosystem Approach, Our Common Future, Values and Sustainable Development, Cultural Assumptions and Sustainable Development, Africa and the Industrial Revolution, The Quality of Life and Sustainable Development, and Decisions for a "Developing" Nation.

Interdisciplinary curriculum guides offer standards-based innovative lesson plans in social studies, language arts, science, math, art, media literacy and cross-cultural understanding, based on films with young lead characters.  Moreover, this program builds literacy skills through subtitle reding by captivating students and lyrical storytelling.  Professional development workshops also available.


High School (9-12)

Choices for the 21st Century -A nationwide multifaceted educational program to encourage interest within the United States in international issues through teaching and professional development on the secondary level and community-based adult programs.

Decisions, Decisions - Access to an online and printed current events curriculum for grades 5-10.

Great Decisions - Used as a basic textbook or as supplemental material in the classroom, GD helps teachers integrate current and critical world issues into courses in U.S. history, world history, economics, government and current affairs. FPA also publishes the companion Teacher's Guide, which provides summaries, activities, teaching strategies, glossaries and reproducible handouts.
