Language Classroom Instruction Resources

Teaching Communicatively in the Foreign Language Classroom -several activities that can be used from the beginning of a first-year language course, applicable to all languages. The goal of these activities is to prepare students to use the target language analytically; i.e., these activities will help the students to think, reason, and solve problems in the target language, rather than simply memorize set phrases, words, endings, etc.

Multi-Language Resources from Language Links-These Multi-language sites are the ones I have found most interesting to visit and most useful for teaching. You may consider combining some of them to develop curriculum for your students which integrates a more global perspective.

GLOBAL EYES -Check these newspapers regularly to become a global citizen! By checking out these newspapers, you & your students will know the latest headline news, politics, economics, arts, and pop culture from around the world, from the people in their native languages. General Language Resources

What's in a Name? -In this introductory foreign language unit, students consider the etymology of different words, including their own names. They examine how influences from other languages, including computer languages, find their way into English discourse.

Spanish

American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese (AATSP)-Professional organization to assist with the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese.

Ask Eric Spanish Lesson Plans -Various Spanish lessons for all grade levels and language levels.

Hispanic World -In this six lesson unit, students will conduct primary and secondary research to know the "Hispanohablantes" in the world. These explorations will serve as windows for these Spanish-speaking countries for students to acquire information and impression from different perspectives.

Mundo Latino - A site for Spanish language students to gather information on the Latin World including cultural, dinero, motor, musica, ninos, prensa, y viajar.

Russian Languages

Central Association of Russian Teachers of America- Professional organization to assist in the teaching of Russian, which officially includes the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, but it is open for professionals from other states.

The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL)- Founded in 1941, AATSEEL exists to advance the study and promote the teaching of Slavic and East European languages, literatures, and cultures on all educational levels, elementary through graduate school.

RussNet -RussNet is a Russian language field resource center which provides Russian language learning services and products including information, language modules, courses, materials, in-service teacher training, databases, discussion forums, and gateways to other Russian language resources.

Association of Chinese Teachers- The Association of Chinese Teachers is a professional organization of dedicated educators actively striving for educational excellence and accurate dissemination of information regarding China & the Chinese experience.

Chinese Language Information- This site is a comprehensive navigational tool pointing you to Chinese language related resources.

Mandarin-Are you learning intermediate-level Mandarin? Listen to sound clips from recent VOA newscasts while viewing the corresponding Chinese characters, pinyin pronunciations, and vocabulary lists with word definitions. Updated weekly.

Central Asian Languages

CenAsiaNet -CenAsiaNet offers free Internet-based language learning modules for critical languages of the Caspian/Central Asian Region: Azeri, Kazakh, Turkmen, and Uzbek. The modules can be used both in a group setting or for individual learners. For intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. Arabic Language

Arabic -6 lessons for beginning Arabic from Islam.org

Learn to Read Arabic -These are a few very basic learn to read the alphabet lessons. You may freely copy these lessons for non-commercial uses.

Arabic Storybook -Students will learn to write and illustrate a short story in Arabic . The story tells about a childhood experience; real or fictitious: "when I was young ...". This project is suitable for students of Arabic Levels 1-5.

Arabic -In the following 10 lessons, letters, reading rules, words and sentences are introduced step by step. They are based on the Qur'an and are meant to stimulate the reader to discover the Arabic text.
