In 1964, Josef Korbel founded the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and became its first Dean. On May 28, 2008, GSIS honored its founder, by changing the name of the school to the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. The new name recognizes Korbel's life and work as the intellectual foundation of the school, and the continuing power of his spirit to inspire students and faculty alike.
The Korbel Dinner is the principle fundraising event of the Josef Korbel School and is essential for the continued refinement and expansion of the school's programs, scholarships and centers, which are designed to serve Korbel students and the community at large. The dinner also recognizes local community leaders, whose leadership and commitment exemplify the school's mission set forth by its founder. The first dinner was held in 1998 and has grown every year since, becoming one of Denver's major social events.
The Korbel Dinner established the University of Denver International Bridge Builders Award as a way of recognizing persons who had distinguished themselves as builders of ties between Colorado and the world beyond our national frontiers.
Ten years ago, the Josef Korbel School established the Josef Korbel Humanitarian Award to recognize individuals who have given concrete expression to the values underlying the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through unusually generous philanthropic work within the Denver community.
The Global Leadership Award is given out on a rare occasion to individuals who through their leadership, have influenced and brought about change for the improvement of human kind on the global stage.
