Certificate in Humanitarian Assistance

This program provides a deep understanding of the theoretical, normative and practical dimensions of humanitarianism within the context of humanitarian intervention and disaster relief. Students are equipped to understand the nature of complex emergencies, concepts of humanitarian assistance and pragmatic humanitarianism, plus the global contexts of crisis, principles of humanitarian intervention and the structure and function of international organizations that deliver such assistance. The certificate currently supports the study of master's degree candidates within the University of Denver.

The program places strong emphasis on substantive field-based training, including participation in an internship. Extensive field course activity is crucial to skills development and an understanding of best practices in professional humanitarian assistance work. The certification can be completed within a 12-month period. Admission is based on an application and interview. Depending on interest and commitment, students are able to complete either a certificate (approximately 32-35 credit hours) or a concentration (approximately 15-20 credit hours) in humanitarian assistance. If you are interested in either the certificate or concentration, please contact the office of Graduate Admissions at (303) 871-2324 or korbeladm@du.edu. Please note: this is not a stand alone certificate.

Interested students must apply and be accepted to an MA program to then pursue this certificate in conjunction with an MA.
