Student Organizations

For students wishing to get involved outside of the classroom, extracurricular opportunities abound at the University of Denver. Below is a small sampling of clubs and organizations that may be of interest to International Studies majors/minors. Please visit the student groups section for a description of additional organizations.

Note: Student organizations are neither managed, nor financed by the BA Program in International Studies. Some organizations may be eligible for funding by the All Undergraduate Student Senate.

Sigma Iota Rho Honorary Society (SIR)

Sigma Iota Rho is an international studies honor society that recognizes students' academic achievement in the field of international affairs. The organization provides opportunities to discuss topics of interest with experts in international affairs, as well as social events.

International Studies Student Association (ISSA)

The association promotes connections and support among students with an interest in international affairs and serves as a vehicle for expanding global awareness through special lectures, cultural events and service opportunities. It also serves as the student voice of the international studies department by presenting student ideas, innovations and issues to the undergraduate faculty.

Model United Nations Club

Open to all University of Denver undergraduates, this club brings together students interested in learning about the United Nations and international relations by participating in Model UN conferences held throughout the year at local, regional and national levels. Model UN conferences are simulations of the UN institutions, in which college students assume the role of "ambassadors" to the UN and debate current issues on the UN agenda. Preparation for and participation in these conferences provide students with training in specific international problems, an understanding of the role of international organizations and experience with the process of conflict resolution at the international level.

Middle Eastern Studies Student Initiative (MESSI)

The initiative promotes dialogue, cooperation and support among students, faculty, staff and the community with an interest in Middle Eastern affairs related to the social sciences or humanities. MESSI produces original scholarly work that may be reviewed and/or published through the resources of the organization, as well as provides links and resources for research, study abroad and language training. MESSI also sponsors events, such as guest speakers and lectures pertaining to research performed by the members or current events.

International Student Organization (ISO)

The organization welcomes those who wish to interact and further their understanding of diverse cultures by joining and participating in many exciting activities. ISO serves as an umbrella association, which unites the individual foreign student organizations on campus. It was formed to establish an international community and to ease the integration of international students into the U.S.
