CHINA Town Hall is a national day of programming on China involving 40 cities throughout the United States

Program:
Starting exactly at 6:00pm, the program will open with a webcast from Washington, D.C., featuring Kurt M. Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and the Pacific Affairs, discussing Issues in U.S.-China Relations.  National Committee president Steve Orlins will moderate this 45-minute portion of the program, comprised of a 15-minute talk followed by half an hour during which Mr. Campbell will respond to questions emailed in from audience members throughout the country. At 6:45pm, a 15 minute break will occur with refreshments. At 7:00pm, Douglas Spelman, Deputy Director, Kissinger Institute on China & the United States at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars will be at our Denver event to present “China-US Relations,” moderated by CCUSC Executive Director Suisheng Sam Zhao.

Speakers:
Prior to his current position, Kurt Campbell was the CEO and Co-Founder of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and concurrently served as the director of the Aspen Strategy Group and chairman of the Editorial Board of the Washington Quarterly. He was the founder of StratAsia, a strategic advisory firm, and was the senior vice president, director of the International Security Program, and Henry A. Kissinger Chair in National Security Policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He was also associate professor of public policy and international relations at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and assistant director of the Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University.

Douglas Spelman was educated at Oberlin College (A.B. in Religion, 1963) and Harvard University (M.A. and Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages, 1973).  In 1972, he served as an interpreter for the visit to the United States of the Chinese Ping-pong Team.  In 1977 he joined the United States Foreign Service, from which he retired in 2007 with the rank of Minister Counselor in its Senior Service.  His domestic assignments included the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (as a China analyst and Director of the Office of Strategic, Proliferation, and Military Analysis), the Taiwan Coordination Staff, and the India desk. Overseas, he served in Hong Kong (twice), Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, the Taipei office of the American Institute in Taiwan, and, from 2002 to 2005, as Consul General in Shanghai.
