Students charm local NGOs, secure career leads

Josef Korbel School students impressed Colorado-based nonprofits with their professional skills at a recent networking event.

Over 100 Josef Korbel School of International Studies' students connected with Colorado-based nonprofits offering internship, employment and volunteer opportunities last week.

The career fair- an annual event hosted by the Josef Korbel School's Office of Career and Professional Development- welcomed roughly 20 local organizations, such as the Adelante Foundation of Honduras, ACCION, Global Green Funds, the Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness & Action and the Leadership Institute of New Sudan.

"The Josef Korbel School has an excellent program that focuses on development and social issues," said Matt Korn, development director for Together with the Children. "The interns I work with from here have a strong grasp of social issues and concern for global issues, and they help us by spreading awareness and getting the word out to the local community."

NGO Fair

The Colorado-based NGOs are consistently impressed by the Josef Korbel School graduate students, and are excited to hire them as interns and full-time employees, added Rae Ann Boris-Easley, director of the Office of Career and Professional Development.

"It was geared towards volunteer and internship opportunities more than jobs," said Katie Susman, a second-year dual-degree student in International Studies and Social Work. "But it was really helpful to talk to some of the agencies before applying online.

In order to prepare for the networking event, students polished their resume, developed a 30-second "elevator speech" and researched the attending organizations. Boris-Easley suggest following-up with a thank you note and staying in touch with the new contacts until the right opportunity materializes.

The Office of Career and Professional Development is also eager to work with the students who want prospects outside of Colorado, as well as non-NGO employers that were not represented at this particular career fair, said Bories-Easley.
