Krystal Atha, an MI student from the University of Denver's Korbel School, is working
in El Salvador's region known as the Ruta de Paz (or "route of peace") as a community
organization and economic development Volunteer. Her primary project supports the
Association of Tourism Development (ASDETURP), which uses responsible tourism as
a source of income for communities in the Ruta de Paz. Atha's primary work supports
ASDETURP through event planning, creating an internal communication procedure, writing
grants and internal bylaws, project design and bookkeeping. She is currently working
with artisans to create a November exposition to showcase art from the Ruta de Paz,
to celebrate and promote a sense of identity and culture. Atha has also worked with
other Volunteers to organize regional youth camps on creativity, professionalism,
health, and sexual awareness. She will be serving in El Salvador until early 2012.
