Derrick Goodwin | First Year MA Candidate

Derrick Goodwin, MA Candidate at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies

Education: BS in Environmental Science, United States Military Academy at West Point

Program at the Josef Korbel School: International Security

What work experience do you have? I have served as an Officer in the United States Army for 12 years. I have held duty positions such as a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in Korea; Company Commander in Iraq, Alaska, and Detroit, MI. Most recently served as a strategist for United States Forces Korea.

Why did you choose the Josef Korbel School? As a strategist for the Army, I will be constantly confronted with both international and domestic issues. Having worked overseas before, I know the best prepared strategist have an in-depth knowledge of both domestic and host nation history, customs, and policy. The Korbel School is ranked in the top 10 for International Relations programs in the country so I knew I would be challenged and rewarded for completing the two year program. Korbel has an excellent track record and faculty that made it an easy choice to apply. Also, I've always wanted to live in the great city of Denver. The activities available to you here are endless. Traditional sports, extreme sports, excellent restaurants, nightlife, museums! You name it, Denver's got it.

What are your career goals? Once I complete my degree, I will return to the United States Army and serve as a strategist on either a planning or policy staff. I hope to serve in Europe in either a Combatant Command or major Army command. Following my Army Career, I would like to continue my government service as a Foreign Service Officer.

So far, how has the Josef Korbel School prepared you for your career? Having completed one quarter of graduate school, I am extremely impressed with both the faculty and my fellow classmates.  The backgrounds and experiences of the students here at Korbel amazes me every day.  Getting this type of exposure and engagement, both academically and practically, will help me be a better strategist, planner, and problem solver for the Army.  I have been very pleased with the guest speakers that come to Korbel.  Hearing the thoughts and opinions of world class scholars on issues such as Syria, Iran, and China, as well as U.S. Civil-Military relations, is preparing me for a successful career in international relations.
