Throughout Dexter Gordon's career he used an Otto Link model (and sometimes, in the fifties, also a Berg Larsen model). In his own words(in a biography by Stan Britt) he said that he first used a closed opening Otto Link (4 or 5) but exhanged it with Illinois Jaquet and got a 6.I`ve been listening to Dexter for 15 years and I think that was the mouthpiece he used on his great early sixties recordings for Blue Note (it sounds like a medium mouthpiece). The horn he used thru 40´-50´s and most part of sixties was,to my knowledge,a Conn "Ladyface".He started playing Selmer MKVI at the end of the sixties (or early 70´s) and it was reportedly given to him by Ben Webster. He must have changed his mouthpiece too because my ex-sax teacher told me that while in Finland during the 70´s Dexter was playing a club gig and complained that there was something wrong with his horn and gave it to my teacher for repairs. His mouthpiece, according to my teacher, was Otto Link 7 with Rico 3 reeds.Horn was also in perfect condition, only adjustment my teacher made was to put the reed in its proper position (it was way over the tip!).Reason for this was that Dex had been fooling around with too much whisky that night!
