Degree Programs
Students in the Percussion Program may elect the bachelor of music,
bachelor of arts, master of music, and master of arts in music degrees.
In conjunction with the University of Denver's Daniels College of Business,
Lamont offers the 3/2 integrated bachelor's/master's degree program that
enables a student to complete both an undergraduate degree in music and
a master of business administration degree in five years. Percussionists
interested contemporary music styles can also pursue the Jazz Studies and
Commercial Music Program. All undergraduate music degrees at Lamont are
suitable for the Public School Teaching Certificate Program offered through
the College of Education.
Performance Opportunities
No matter what area of emphasis or degree students choose, they can
participate in any of Lamont's student performance ensembles, including
the Lamont Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Lamont Opera Theatre, Lamont
Chorale, Jazz Ensemble, or Jazz and Commercial Music Combos.
John Kinzie, is Director of the Percussion Division and Instructor of Classical percussion, John has been a member of the Colorado Symphony since 1985 and joined Lamont in 1996. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toledo and a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Before joining the CSO, John was Principal Percussion with the Toledo Symphony. He was Principal Percussion with the Colorado Music Festival from 1985 to 1991. He is currently performing at the Grand Teton Music Festival in the summers.
Mike Marlier, instructor of drum set percussion, has been playing drums since he the age of five. He has taught privately for 18 years. Mr. Marlier has performed and recorded with a number of professional artists including the GRP All-Stars, Mose Allison, Julian Lennon, Dave Valentin, Los Lobos, Images, Steve Haun, and Wake Up Call. His drumming can be heard on a host of local and national radio and television commercials. Offering a diverse and well-rounded approach to the drum set, he strives to share his knowledge with his students. Composer and keyboardist Dave Grusin calls Mr. Marlier "Denver's answer to all the superstar drummers. This guy is a great player."
