Academic Programs

Artist Diploma

Artist Diploma programs are hightly selective, intensive and focused programs of advanced professional studies designed to satisfy the needs of very talented and accomplished musicians of any age, nationality or background. The programs may be completed in a minimum of two years, but may be extended to accommodate candidate's wishes. There are Artist Diploma programs available for all instruments and vocalists.

Admissions

Admission into the program is in two steps:

  • Interested candidates will send a resume and a good quality tape (video preferable) of unedited performances totaling no more than 25 minutes playing time. Academic transcripts are not required.
  • From the pool of interested candidates, the School will invite a limited number to audition and interview in person (the School will provide one night dormitory accommodation to out-of-state candidates). A maximum of two candidates will be admitted to the programs each year.

Program Requirements

The Artist Diploma will be awarded to candidates that successfully complete the following:

  1. Three full-length solo recitals
  2. Particpation in at least one chamber music group every quarter of study, and in all performance classes organized by the instrumental or vocal department.
  3. Participation in the Lamont Solo Honors Competition (Concerto Competition) and the Lamont Chamber Music Honors Competition.
  4. Proficiency exams in music theory and music history (candidates may audit remedial courses in these subject in preparation for these exams).
  5. Seminar in Musical Interpretation course.

Candidates may also take additional academic or music courses of their choosing, as elective credit hours.


Classical Guitar Performance

Program Requirements

The Artist Diploma in Classical Guitar will be awarded to candidates that successfully complete the following:

  1. Three full-length solo recitals
  2. Particpation in at least two ensembles or chamber music groups every quarter of study, and in all ensemble concerts organized by the Guitar Department.
  3. Participation in the Lamont Solo Honors Competition (Concerto Competition) and the Lamont Chamber Music Honors Competition.
  4. Proficiency exams in music theory and music history (candidates may audit remedial courses in these subject in preparation for these exams).
  5. Seminar in Musical Interpretation course.

Candidates may also take additional academic or music courses of their choosing, as elective credit hours.


The Guitar Program

The Guitar Department at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music offers some of the most distinguished programs of study in guitar performance in America.

Under the mentorship of acclaimed international concert artist, pedagogue and composer Ricardo Iznaola, graduates of the Lamont Guitar Program have earned honor and distinction as finalists and prize winners in national and international competititons, and have established themselves as outstanding professionals in the areas of teaching and performance.

The Guitar Department offers Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees in Guitar Performance in both classical and jazz idioms.

Classical Piano

Artist Diploma candidates will work under the supervision of acclaimed international virtuosos Theodor Lichtmann and Alice Rybak.

Program Requirements

The Artist Diploma in Classical Piano will be awarded to candidates that successfully complete the following:

  1. Three full-length solo recitals
  2. Particpation in at least one chamber music group every quarter of study, and in all performance classes organized by the Keyboard Department.
  3. Participation in the Lamont Solo Honors Competition (Concerto Competition) and the Lamont Chamber Music Honors Competition.
  4. Proficiency exams in music theory and music history (candidates may audit remedial courses in these subject in preparation for these exams).
  5. Seminar in Musical Interpretation course.

Candidates may also take additional academic or music courses of their choosing, as elective credit hours.



ORCHESTRAL CONDUCTING

Artist Diploma candidates will work under the supervision of Dr. Lawrence Golan, Director of Orchestral Studies, Professor of Conducting, and Chair of the Ensemble Directors and Conducting Department.

Program Requirements

The Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting will be awarded to candidates that successfully complete the following:

  1. Two full-length conducting recitals

  2. Four concert appearances conducting the Lamont Symphony Orchestra (1 piece per concert)

  3. Proficiency exams in music theory and music history (candidates may audit remedial courses in these subjects in preparation for the exams).

  4. Seminar: The Extra-Musical Roles of the Music Director

  5. Seminar: Musical Interpretation

Candidates may also take additional academic or music courses of their choosing, as elective credit hours.

Note: Artist Diploma candidates will generally be awarded the position of Assistant Conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and the intern position of Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestras.
