The Department of Languages and Literatures suspended its graduate programs indefinitely in 2002. The following information is for those students currently completing their graduate degrees with us. Though the Department of Languages and Literatures generally has no specifically separate graduate curriculum, we do offer advanced courses (3000 level) for our own MA candidates and for cognate studies of degree candidates in other programs. Independent Study opportunities are available in the diverse literary, cultural, and critical specializations of our international faculty. Any graduate courses have, at the minimum and with noted exceptions, a prerequisite of at least two years of college-level study of the language under which they are listed. Our admission requirements are listed below; please read through all the information for the degrees offered. If you would like more specific information on any of our programs, feel free to fill out the On-Line Graduate Inquiry Form, or contact us directly at: Graduate Programs Degree Requirements for the Master of Arts in French, German, Russian with thesis Requires 45 quarter hours of course work, of which 12 quarter hours may be in cognate areas or Independent Study, and 5 quarter hours in Independent Research toward thesis. The thesis committee consists of three faculty members from the department and one outside chair. Degree Requirements for the Master of Arts in French without thesis Requires 52 quarter hours of course work, of which 12 quarter hours may be in cognate areas or Independent Study. Supplemental Department Admission Requirements: Appropriate undergraduate major or comparable background in the language to be studied is required. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test required. All MA candidates are required to demonstrate a reading knowledge of at least one supplemental language. It is recommended that all candidates have resided at least three months in a country where their chosen major language is spoken. You may apply at any time during the year.
