Individually-Arranged Russian Courses at the University of Denver


RUSS 1998 -- KEEPING UP WITH ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN (1 cr/qtr). This course is designed for students who have had enough Russian to feel bored in either the first quarter or the first two quarters of the first-year Russian sequence (RUSS 1001, RUSS 1002, RUSS 1003) but not enough to place into the second-year sequence itself. The course is tailored to the student, and prepares for entry into the Russian Program proper in either the Winter or Spring Quarters. Participation in the weekly Russian converstion hour is encouraged. PREQ.: limited enrollment card, placement test, and permission of instructor.

RUSS 2998 -- KEEPING UP WITH RUSSIAN (1 cr/qtr). This course is designed for the following students: 1) those with too much knowledge of Russian to place in the first quarter of the second-year Russian sequence (RUSS 2001, RUSS 2002, RUSS 2100) but not enough to place in the third-year sequence; 2) those who wish to supplement their primary Russian course or bridge a gap in their studies of Russian. The first category of student, using the same interactive video, computer programs and textbooks which are used in RUSS 2002, will maintain and increase their level of Russian as necessary to subsequently merge with the second-year class. The second category of student, using the same books as their primary Russian classes (see appropriate courses for complete information), and/or using different texts, will strengthen their command of Russian with an extra hour of contact time per week. There is a set class time for this course, but other times can also be arranged with the instructor. PREQ.: limited enrollment card, placement test, and permission of instructor.

RUSS 3991/4991 -- INDEPENDENT STUDY (up to 10 credits TOTAL). This course is designed by agreement of the instructor and the student to cover a topic of interest. PREQ.: permission of instructor.

RUSS 3995/4995 -- INDEPENDENT RESEARCH (up to 10 credits TOTAL). Much like RUSS 3991/4991 above, this course is designed by agreement of the instructor and student interested in a certain topic. PREQ.: permission of instructor.

RUSS 3996/4996 -- READINGS: SECOND SLAVIC LANGUAGE (4 cr non-degree; may be taken no more than twice). A course designed to use the student's knowledge of Russian as a basis from which to learn the language essentials, and gain reading ability, in a second Slavic language (usually Polish). PREQ.: permission of instructor.

RUSS 3997 -- RUSSIAN: LEARN THROUGH SERVICE (up to 4 cr). This course provides an opportunity unique to DU's Russian Language and Literature Program -- the chance to work with a service provider, the local Russian community, or to intern for credit at the Deb Palmieri Russia, LLC, which is based in Denver. The student has a chance to learn about, and actually work in and with, the community, business and Russian. PREQ.: permission of instructor and service provider.

RUSS 3998 -- HONORS THESIS (up to 4 cr). This provides credit for a student's work on their Honors Thesis of 25-30 pages in Russian, with a short defense in Russian. This course is reserved for Honor's students and students opting for the Departmental Honors Option. PREQ.: Senior standing, overall GPA of at least 3.3, major GPA of at least 3.7, and permission of instructor.

THIRD- AND FOURTH-YEAR COURSES

RUSS 3520 -- BUSINESS RUSSIAN (4 cr). Self-explanatory: an examination of the way contemporary Russian is used in a business context, with cultural survival skills inluded. PREQ.: RUSS 2100 or 2110, or permission of instructor (RUSS 3500 recommended).

RUSS 3800 -- RUSSIAN LITERARY THEORY (4 cr).An overview of the greatest Russian theorists ranging from the Formalists of the 20s to Bakhtin and the Tartu semioticians. Russian literary theory has changed the way language -- and reality -- is perceived. Your English literature friends will turn green with envy. PREQ.: RUSS 2100 or 2110, or permission of instructor (one completed RUSS 3701 recommended).
