M.F.A. in Electronic Media Arts & Design 2010-2011

Overview

The School of Art and Art History offers a master of fine arts degree in electronic media arts & design (eMAD). This is the teaching credential for higher education. The eMAD graduate program fuses the practical and theoretical aspects of electronic media arts. It emphasizes the creative uses of emerging technology integrated with visual language and critical thought. Within this context, the program provides an opportunity for research and further development of knowledge and skills in electronic media arts, and instigates reevaluation within the context of art and design in its concepts and applications. The eMAD program provides motivated individuals the opportunity to work with professionally active faculty members committed to mentoring students who will become leaders in the field of new media. Interaction with graduate faculty, fellow students, art history faculty, faculty from across the university and visiting professionals provides ample opportunities to discuss, critique and debate topics surrounding the student's thesis.

The curriculum is interdisciplinary and tailored to each individual's needs. Students participate in a combination of required graduate courses, elective courses from across disciplines and independent advanced course work that supplement skill base and theoretical interests that apply to the student's M.F.A. project.

As a result of the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum, students can work with faculty from across campus as well as within the fine arts expertise (in game theory and development, digital video and audio, environmental/sustainable design, installation and performance art, 3-D digital imaging, public art, sculpture, printmaking, painting, ceramics and electronic media). Students are encouraged to seek their advisers' permission to take classes offered through other programs if the class content supports the student's thesis. Up to 12 hours of other course work can be substituted for requirements with written pre-approval.
