Civil Case Management

Federal Caseflow Management

This project seeks to identify practices, processes and rules that contribute to (and detract from) the most timely determination and disposition of civil actions in federal district courts.  The project is informed by, and hopes to build upon, the conclusions reached by the Federal Judicial Center’s 1977 study, Case Management and Court Management in United States District Courts, and subsequent studies by the National Center for State Courts, the RAND Institute for Civil Justice and others.  The study also considers the Judicial Conference’s response to the 1996 RAND study of case management under the Civil Justice Reform Act.

The primary outcome of this project will be a report that includes discussion of the empirical and anecdotal data collected, as well as recommendations for reform.
