Minutes of LISA Meetings

October  31, 2001

The Oct. 31, 2001 LISA meeting was held in the Amy Hyde building.

President Lisa Cole called the meeting to order. with a total of seven students,

Dr. Clara Sitter and two alumni, Rochelle Logan and Diana Sweany. 

Lisa Cole distributed the agenda for the meeting which included:

Refreshments, Call meeting to order, Reports from officers and Internet Committee, Comments on CLA, Mentoring program, Upcoming alumni events, Christmas party, and Other? 

Amy Dissmeyer stated that the LISA website architecture, which is in the design process.  

CLA was discussed. The Collaboratory presentation went very well. Several LIS students attended.

Other LISA presentations went very well too. It was a positive experience for the students to have the opportunity to present to library colleagues.  

Sue Lathrop mentioned that she felt that University of Denver’s library school should have had a booth a CLA. Emporia, which also had a poster session, had a booth. She felt that our school seemed less visible because of this.

Dr. Sitter added that there was no money for a booth this year.

Suggestions for next year’s conference,which will be held in Keystone; a LISA poster session, perhaps concerning the program’s different cognates or special student projects; a breakfast for DU alumni 

The potential mentoring program was discussed. This would be an informal program to connect students with alumni mentors.

Kathy Bailey made the motion to go forward with the mentoring program, Lisa Priebe seconded the motion. It was voted on and passed.

Questions to ask for matching students to mentors were suggested: location of student/ mentor, career goal, concentration in the program. 

Alumni visitors- this is a series of alumni talks. Alumni are asked to discuss their particular area of librarianship to give insight to students on career options. Originally, alumni from the current program were to be invited however graduates from the previous DU program will also be considered.

Suggestions for future topics: distance education, special/ corporate, alternative careers.

Suggestions for future guests: Martin Garner and Chris Brown. 

The possibility of a LISA Holiday party was discussed and decided against.

The next LISA meeting will be held after the beginning of the year.  

Everyone at the meeting introduced themselves, giving their background in the program and other pertinent information.

Alumni visitor Rochelle Logan spoke. She is a 1991 graduate. She was working at the State Library with Keith Lance when Jamie LaRue approached her and asked her to apply for the associate directorship at Douglas Public Library. Rochelle enjoys her job very much. Her background in research has helped her immensely in her current position.  

Alumni visitor Diana Sweany spoke. She works at the Koelbel Library in the Arapahoe Library District where she also completed her practicum. She is currently developing web classes. Rochelle teaches a variety of other classes, from basic computer skills to genealogy searching.  She spends several hours a day at the reference desk. Rochelle said that she thought that the DU program prepared her very well for her career in libraries.

Rochelle commented that the “DU network” of library colleagues has been wonderful to have and advised everyone to hang on to their contacts from library school.

Rochelle and Diana answered questions.

Meeting was adjourned.
