students matched?

Marcy
Phelps, an Independent Information Professional spoke to the group
Marcy
passed out information regarding Independent Information Professionals.
She has been in the business since spring 2001 and considers herself
a generalist. Marcy is also on
the development team at E-Global library
She
locates, evaluates, retrieves, manages, and organizes information for
clients. She always receives
permission from her clients before she speaks to any groups.
Two clients include the City of Lafayette and a large HMO
Most
Information Professionals have a niche market, such as food services,
biochemistry, reference, etc…
There
are quite a few issues within the profession such as does one need a degree,
license, or certificate?
Marcy
feels the following are skills needed for this profession: marketing skills,
reference interviewing skills, the ability to define and implement goals,
understanding how a small business operates, assisting in solutions, follow
through skills, the ability to develop ideas and not being afraid to take
risks
A
typical week does not consist of 40 hours worked for a client, rather a
mixture of researching, marketing, and making sales calls.
She also does quite a bit of reading outside of the library business
Typical
income range is from $75 to $100 per hour
Marcy
also brought along resources for students to browse
