Minutes of LISA Meetings

June 19, 1997

Minutes of LISA Meeting on Thursday, June 19, 1997, 6 p.m. at Penrose Library Exhibition Room, University of Denver

Attendees: Roger Greer (LISA faculty advisor), Deb Pruitt (note taker), Deb Breathouwer, Traci Steckel, Katherine Kent, Ann Seidl, Barbara Tillmans.

OPENING:

Ann Seidl, President of LISA, briefly listed topics to be covered. These included news about the accreditation process; ideas for a LISA social event;

Parapos conference; use of the LISA lab; communication issues (possible LISA listserv and additions to the LISA Web page); and ALA student membership.

ACCREDITATION:

Ann announced the good news that Rick Forsman (from Dennison Library and on the LISV Advisory Board) has been elected to the ALA Accreditation Committee. Also, Ann said the accreditation process is moving along. An Accreditation Report was submitted to ALA in mid-May to favorable committee reviews and a formal site inspection is expected in the fall of 1998 which should coincide with another faculty hire.

ALA STUDENT MEMBERSHIP:

Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Keith Lance and Bob Pasicznyuk will be representing the LISV program at the ALA conference in San Francisco next week. Roger Greer (alumni advisor to the LISV program) said that promotion of student membership for ALA, SLA, and CLA is very important. He also said that a travel fellowship should be researched so that students can attend meetings like the ALA conferences. Membership in ALA is $25 each year for the first three years for students.

A Welcome Wagon Information Packet to be given to new and perspective students, and to be distributed by LISA members to students during the first class meetings of Understanding the Information User and Organization of Information was discussed as a way to promote ALA, CLA and SLA membership and to increase awareness of LISA.

LISA LAB USE:

Debra Grabosky and Katherine Kent brought up concerns about the lack of use of the LISA Lab located at University College on Josephine Street. If the lab isn't used more frequently, other departments at University College might start using the facilities. This discussion led to a lengthy discussion about a social function to be held at the lab:

LISA SOCIAL EVENT:

To increase awareness of the lab facilities, to promote the application process into the LISV Program, and to assist LISV students in getting acquainted, a pot-luck lab open-house event was suggested by Katherine Kent. Katherine is the head of the committee for this event scheduled for August 15 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tentative plans include a computer demonstration by Chris Brown, a presentation by Debra Grabosky giving pointers on how to write an application essay, an e-mail workshop by Ann Seidl, as well as having a mentoring sign-up table, a financial aid information table, and providing student membership application forms for ALA, SLA, and CLA.

Anyone with additional ideas should e-mail Katherine at kkent@du.edu.

A planning meeting for the open-house is scheduled for July 17th at 6 p.m. at the lab.

PARAPROS:

Katherine Kent discussed the PARAPROS conference to be held August 1 at the Aurora Public Library and Aurora History Museum. Attendance costs $5, and Katherine stressed the importance of networking with paraprofessionals who are the heart of the library profession. The conference workshops are of vital interest and attendance by LISV students should be promoted. Fliers for distribution in current LISV classes were given to meeting attendees.

Katherine also mentioned that a new D.U. PARAPROS Board Member is needed.

Roger mentioned that the founder of PARAPROS is Becky Pascal in Nebraska and we should keep her in mind as a possible key-note speaker at future events.

COMMUNICATION:

The possibility of a LISA listserv was briefly discussed.

LISA Web Page:

A student directory which would list contacts with expertise in various areas (for example, Ann Seidl is very proficient with DU e-mail) was discussed. It was decided that a form added to the LISA Web page for students to sign-up for the student directory would be the best approach.

And Ann Seidl, as President of LISA will be adding a letter to the Web page. Jim Foyle will be asked to contribute a letter to the alumni of the previous library school at the University of Denver.

As a promotion for the application process, it was suggested that a counter be put on the Web page for the number of students accepted in the LISV program.

FUND RAISING:

With only $100 in the LISA account, ways to raise funds were discussed. These included selling such items as mugs, tote bags, T-shirts, sweatshirts or lapel pins. A possible contest for a LISA logo was mentioned. This topic will be brought up at the next LISA meeting. It was decided to invite Kim Dority to the next meeting, a member of the LISV Advisory Board and on that entity's fundraising committee.

Ann will be checking into the Graduate Student Alliance for possible funds.

MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS:

1. Debra Grabosky and Emily Hnath will be forming an SLA student group.

2. Roger Greer emphasized the importance of contacting and involving alumni and former faculty of the old library program at the University of Denver, such as Margaret Goggin.
